Worrying about melanoma?
- By: Darell Belen
Generally, skin moles are harmless features on your body. But these normal skin moles can also cause you to worry a lot. Do you know about melanoma? Melanoma is a medical condition, where the skin contracts cancer. Skin moles becoming cancerous are brought about by many factors or causes. In order to avoid such an occurrence, people with skin moles should be aware of these factors.
One such factor is having dysplastic nevus in your body or having more than 50 moles. But this does not imply that all the people who have more number of moles or dysplastic nevus will suffer from cancer. When you compare the probability of getting cancer between persons with less number of moles and with more number of moles, the latter has a better chance. Scientific research has also thrown a lot of light on this topic.
A lot of research was also put on the other causative factors. Melanoma has roots also in some genetic or hereditary factors. You may have melanoma, if you notice that it runs in your family. If your parents, siblings, or other family members have contracted skin cancer, odds are that you will also have it. In some cases, skin disorders like xerodermapigmentosum can be inherited and passed on. In such cases, there will be a higher chance to get melanoma as your skin will be too sensitive to sun's exposure. You shouldn't panic, though, because there are a lot of effective methods to solve it. With the quality of technology we have today, complete mole removal can be done. The laser surgeries undertaken by many patients with melanoma are successful solutions.
Sometimes your skin will not be naturally sensitive to sun light. But the use of certain drugs, antibiotics and antidepressants can heighten the skin's sensitivity to the sun. Even intake of certain types of hormonal tablets can cause the skin to turn cancerous. In these cases, you will experience having your immune system become suppressed. This will cause you to develop melanoma. This is not to cause unnecessary alarm to people with moles.
These are mainly stated to create more awareness among people with moles. Avoiding the causative agents would prohibit the development of melanoma. The sensitivity to sun exposure is higher for those with very fair complexion. It is even higher for people with blue eyes and blond hair. Thus they need to be more careful during the summer, especially when they are traveling. Getting one kind of melanoma will increase the chances of getting the other associated types. Have you come across people using tanning booths or sun lamps? Doctors caution people under 30 not to use these tanning booths or sun lamps, especially if they have moles. Avoid exposing your skin to them for prolonged periods of time.
I hope that this article makes you aware about all the indicators that show how a normal skin turns out to be cancerous. Again, they are not dangerous and benign. Hence, there is no need to be threatened by them in the first place. Surprisingly, they are treated as beauty marks in some cultures, provided they are located on certain parts of the body.
