Earning Certificate at TABC Texas Requires Appropriate Training - By: Jan Kaas

When working in an establishment that serves food and alcohol, all supervisors on the alcohol side of the business are required to be certified by a TABC Texas approved trainer. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission requires that all workers, even those in a retail environment that only handles sales for off site consumption be trained in the laws governing alcohol sales. In order to train others to earn the certificate that the TABC Texas authorities will accept, the trainer must possess their own TABC certification.

The establishment in which they work must also have a Texas liquor license, specifying the type of alcoholic beverages they are legally authorized to sell, as well as the hours during which they can offer alcohol for sale. Some communities may also have specific regulations regarding the sale of alcohol and anyone with certification caught violating the laws of the TABC Texas authorities can hold them personally liable. In many establishment, if an employee is caught violating the law, they are instantly terminated.

A Texas liquor license is typically in the name of the business or in the name of the business owner, who is held responsible for actions by their employees. There are several places where employers can have their employees receive TABC Texas approved training, making sure they are all aware of their responsibilities concerning the sale of alcohol. Chief among the responsibilities for holders of a Texas liquor license is ensuring that alcohol is not sold to underage customers.

Federal law mandates, and TABC Texas authorities follow that any person that does not appear to be 40 years old or older must provide valid identification before the sale can proceed. Underage sale of alcohol can result in the person making the sale being charged by the state and the owner could lose their Texas liquor license, either on probationary status or permanently. Since TABC Texas alcohol sales training is available online, in a classroom setting as well as by other employees certified to provide the training, there is no reason for violations to occur. This could include selling alcohol on days or during the hours that are contrary to the Texas liquor license.

Many companies will offer training to their employees at their place of business to help satisfy the TABC Texas certification requirements. Some individuals will undertake their training needs on their own and achieve their TABC Texas certification on their own time in order to enhance their position with their current employer. Others will do the same in hopes of being able to move to another employer that requires the certification to be able to work on their own. In many instances, once training has been completed, the person can take their certification exam online and if they pass can print out their certificate immediately after.
