Tips For Choosing The Right Fuel Card

Author : Cameron Rochelle   Top Author

With all the different options available for a fuel card, it is important to shop around and find just the card that fits your needs. Since not all companies have the same needs, a variety of features are available on cards from different providers as well as cards from a specific company. For large fleets with several different types of vehicles from semi's through to company cars, these multiple program cards from the same provider can be a real advantage. Cards can stay with the vehicle to ensure that the driver always has the card on hand that will provide the best return to the company.

Most fuel cards will designate a fuel company or service station chain at which the card can be used. These are typically the large national and international chains but knowing what types of stations are in the areas of your routes is important. These larger companies typically now have free apps that can be used on a Smartphone, i Pad or tablet that allow you to enter a location by city or address and stations within their network will be displayed in a map format. This is helpful for drivers as well as for those logistics managers that are developing the most fuel effective and efficient routes.

Some options in fleet cards may also provide the opportunity to use any filling station that accepts the traditional credit card that is providing the fuel card. Since these cards are more widely accepted and are not fuel brand specific, the savings may be slightly less than the branded types of cards. However, these cards are also customizable to allow you, as the card manager, to pre-set other types of spending options. This could include maintenance and repairs as well as other types of business related purchases. For managers and those traveling through multiple states and locations these are very practical options.

The amount of fuel savings on each card is a very important consideration. Cards will vary in the way that fuel savings are provided. Some offer a flat rate saving of so much per gallon purchased. When there are no minimum purchase amounts required the total savings are typically a few cents per gallon. Often reaching the minimum purchase amount then boosts the savings per gallon after that in stages. When you know your minimum purchase amount per month these can be a great option since you are not obligated to commit to large volume fuel purchases before savings are achieved.

Specific types of cards are designed for specific types of vehicles. Diesel only fuel cards are ideal for larger transport fleets since they allow you to purchase diesel on a wholesale pricing formula. Typically these will also offer additional features for purchasing gas, often with a variation of the diesel card. Fleet cards like this may or may not have a volume requirement so be sure to check the fine print.

Last, and certainly not least, it is important to check the billing options and payment requirements for the card. In addition, check any fees that may be required to activate the card, cover annual fees or that may be charged by transaction. Keep in mind that fuel card companies do not typically offer the carry over balance options of a credit card. In addition some companies may require a balance be maintained in the account to cover a monthly billing cycle. Other companies may offer bi-weekly or weekly billing options that can really help with larger fleets.
