A Beginner’s Guide To Assisted Living

Author : Sarah Dowling

Unfortunately for many families senior care can prove problematic. When an elderly member of the family needs help or care we all want to do our part but sometimes this is just not possible. No matter how much we try there are occasions where a little extra is needed. Assisted living can offer a dignified solution to such problems.

When a person decides to enter an assisted living community, or a retirement home, they can rely on trained professionals to ensure that their needs are met. At the same time assisted living allows for the continued enjoyment of freedom and independence they have become used to. Here is a look at some of the benefits of assisted living.

Health and Wellbeing

The first benefit of choosing assisted living is that a senior’s health and wellbeing will be closely monitored and attended. Not to be mistaken for a full time care home, an assisted living facility is inhabited by those that still have the ability to look out for themselves in many respects. They simply need a little help along the way.

Qualified staff within the assisted living retirement home will be able to administer medication in the correct dosage and at the right time (something even the sharpest of us have been known to forget from time to time). Wellness checks can be carried out on a routine basis whilst any slips, trips or falls can be seen to immediately.

Assisted living facilities also offer nutritious meals as well as eating plans designated by registered dieticians. This ensures that seniors are able to enjoy a golden retirement knowing that they are receiving the nutrients they need. Special dietary needs can also be adhered to. What’s more, all of this comes without the hassle of preparing it yourself.

Everyday Assistance

As well as overseeing that residents remain in good general health, assisted living is also about ensuring that each individual is offered the help they need when it comes to everyday tasks. Whilst some seniors are capable of washing and dressing themselves, others are not quite so able. Retirement home staff can therefore assist with personal care, including bathing, dressing, grooming and oral hygiene. Some retirement facilities even include their own beauty and barber shops for residents to visit.

Assistance doesn’t stop on the facility grounds either. Many retirement homes also offer escorted transport. This allows residents to visit their favorite stores, visit the doctor or keep any kind of appointment they may have. Where assisted living differs from full time care is that seniors are able to maintain their independence, so visiting the nearest department store is a readily available activity.

Back at the assisted living residence, staff will regularly maintain the cleanliness of private rooms and communal areas. Laundry and housekeeping, including the changing of bed linens, is conducted on a regular basis, and again seniors only have to relax in comfort as someone else does these tasks for them.

Social Interaction

One of the best aspects of assisted living is that it allows an individual the company of others. Whereas seniors may sit at home waiting for someone to visit, particularly those that are widowed, a retirement home puts them in touch with people of a similar age.

Together they can talk and play, or watch television, listen to music or take a stroll around the grounds. Alternatively, many retirement facilities also offer the opportunity to embark on group outings and tours. This might be something as ordinary as visiting the local shopping mall or Movie Theater. It could also be something a little more glamorous, like taking in a show, a guided museum tour or even heading to the beach.

Of course, it’s unlikely that anybody would want to spend all of their time with those around them. Assisted living facilities therefore offer a peaceful sanctuary for seniors. Their private room is perfect for reading, watching television or simply sitting/laying back, relaxing and taking it all in.

Those residing in an assisted living environment can also enjoy a visit from or to their family. Many facilities allow for such visits at any time. This allows seniors to keep in touch with the outside world, as it were, as well as being able to enjoy quality time with those that they love. It’s worth remembering that assisted living in this day and age is a far cry from the confinement it is often perceived to be.
