You Should Really Know Your Options When It Comes To Lymphoma Treatment

Author : Trevor Price

Lymphoma, both the Hodgkin's and NHL type, has grown increasingly more common. Each year, thousands upon thousands of American citizens are diagnosed with the disease, and since the 70s, the numbers have practically doubled. People who have survived it once can suffer a relapse, just like other forms of cancer. However, lymphoma treatment has made great strides lately, and now there are several treatment options available.

The history of lymphoma treatment is a long one. NHL lymphoma has gone through a time of quick growth, probably because we often use much more drugs today that have an effect on your immune system directly. Because there are more than twenty types of the NHL cancer, it can be hard to treat, as every case differs. Hodgkin's lymphoma is not any easier to treat.

For people who have already failed regular chemotherapy, there are more lymphoma treatment alternatives out there. In 1998, Rituxan was introduced, this works with particular lymphomas and individuals that have relapsed and even those with early stages of the disease. Since then, Rituxan has been added as a standard element of the treatment of cancer.

Rituxan has numerous advantages, mainly that it allows for much less chemotherapy and also has fewer side effects. Since it is more gentle and only targets lymphoma cells, patients don't the shortness of breath or blood count drop that regular chemotherapy generally produces. Like all drugs though, there are some serious side-effects that ought to be considered very carefully.

Since Rituxan came on the scene, many other types of lymphoma treatment therapies have become available to cancer patients. Both Zevalin and Bexxar show much promise, especially when compared to Rituxan's success rates. When compared with Rituxan, Zevalin showed almost double the rate of people who experienced a total remission of their cancer, making it so that patients could receive less chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is extremely difficult for cancer victims, so the new lymphoma treatments are a welcomed change. Newer radioimmunotherapy treatments don't have the same loss of hair, sickness and other side effects that chemotherapy has, and these treatments have a higher success rate for years into the future.

Lymphoma treatment has come a long way in the past ten years, and now there are over 180 different drugs which are being tested for the treatment of the NHL type of the cancer. Because there are so many, it will take some time to decide which ones are best, but the biggest advantage to these drugs is that they take only a week or two of treatments, as opposed to months of chemotherapy.

Whether you or someone you know is battling lymphoma, there are treatment methods available. Of course, there is always a chance for relapse, but make certain you don't let discouragement change you.
