Is Your Boyfriend Depressed?

Author : Phil Tucker

When we think of great qualities in a boyfriend, we often seek to compare them to the male role models in our societies. Such qualities usually idolize the male independence, strength, and stoicism in the face of adversity. We have an image of men being tough and almost indifferent to problems, unaffected by the travails of life and liable to keep on trucking no matter what. But do men really work this way? Of course not. Any guy will have his own share of insecurities, sources of sadness and depression. How he balances them will depend in large part on his support network, but many will seek to hide these less than 'exemplary' qualities from those around them. Is your boyfriend actually happy, or is he seeking to hide his depression from you in order to make the right impression? In today's article we take a look at two symptoms to help you identify the truth and be better prepared to help him through a difficult phase in his life.

If your boyfriend's character or personality begins to change, then that can be a clear sign that he is depressed. Where we normally think of depressed people as being sad, low energy and non-confrontational, the truth is that many men become angry and irritable when depressed, not knowing how to deal with their deeper sources of sadness and insecurities. Men who are thinking negative thoughts, who are unable to control themselves and maintain their normal outlooks on life will often become frustrated with themselves, and project this frustration onto others by becoming irritable and prone to mood swings. If this has happened to your boyfriend, don't immediately write him off as a jerk, but probe a little deeper to see what's really going on.

Another way that only you will be able to tell if your boyfriend is wrestling with serious issues of depression, sadness, sorrow or insecurity is how he performs in bed. The truth is that sexual health is intimately linked to our minds, and our outlook on life will have a direct effect on how much enjoyment we are able to derive from sex. Depression is a common cause for loss of desire, leading even to erectile dysfunction and causing further embarrassment and making depression even worse. However, erectile dysfunction is but a symptom, and should not be seen as a sure fire way to diagnose depression.
