There Are Different Treatments For Lymphona

Author : Trevor Price

Exploring The Benefits Of Lymphoma Treatment

Lymphoma, both the Hodgkin's and NHL variety, has grown increasingly more frequent. Each year, a multitude of American citizens are diagnosed with the disease, and since the 70s, the numbers have practically doubled. Those who have survived it once can suffer a relapse, just like other types of cancer. However, lymphoma treatment has made great strides lately, and now there are multiple treatments to consider.

The background of lymphoma treatment is quite a long one. NHL lymphoma has gone through a time of quick growth, possibly because we often use much more medications today that affect your immune system directly. Because there are more than twenty types of the NHL cancer, it can be hard to treat, as every case differs. Hodgkin's lymphoma is not any simpler to treat.

For people who have already failed regular chemotherapy, there are more lymphoma treatment options out there. In 1998, Rituxan was released, this works with particular lymphomas and individuals who have relapsed and even those with early stages of the cancer. Ever since then, Rituxan has become a standard element of the treatment of the disease.

Rituxan has numerous benefits, namely that it allows for much less chemotherapy and also has less side effects. Because it is more gentle and solely targets lymphoma cells, patients don't have the same shortness of breath or blood count drop that standard chemotherapy generally produces. Similar to all drugs however, there are a few serious side-effects that should be considered very carefully.

Since Rituxan came available, many other types of lymphoma treatments are becoming available to cancer patients. Both Zevalin and Bexxar show a lot of promise, especially when compared to Rituxan's success rates. When compared to Rituxan, Zevalin showed nearly double the rate of people who experienced a complete remission of their cancer, which made it so that patients had to receive less chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is extremely difficult for cancer patients, so the new lymphoma treatments are a welcomed change. Newer radioimmunotherapy treatments don't have the same loss of hair, vomiting and other side effects that chemotherapy has, and these treatment options have a higher success rate for years into the future.

Lymphoma treatment has come a long way in the past ten years, and now there are over 180 different drugs which are being tested for the cure for the NHL type of the cancer. Because there are so many, it may take some time to decide which ones work best, but the greatest advantage to these drugs is they take only a week or two of treatments, as opposed to months of chemotherapy.

Whether you or somebody you know is suffering from lymphoma, there are treatment options available. Of course, there's always a chance for relapse, but make sure that you don't let frustration change you.
