Elderly Health Care – How To Find Best Caregiver For Elderly Parents

Author : Simon Morris

Sending an elderly to a nursing home or to an old-age home where his proper care could be taken by trained nurses is always an emotional decision. Not everyone feels comfortable with the idea of sending his or her parents to nursing home because elderly health care is not possible at home.

We feel, we are deserting our parents when we send them out, but there are times when there isn’t any other option left because we can only devote so much time to their health care. For the simple reason that if we devote every waking hour to look after him, as nurses do, it would be hard to manage household finances and other responsibility, and also there is a limit to how much care an untrained person can give to an elderly.

But all is not lost. There are ways in which you can ensure that your elderly parents get the best health care at home. I am going to discuss those ways in the following paragraphs.

Finding the best caregiver for elderly Health Care at home

Hire a certified care giver

The first thing you can do to ascertain that your elderly parents or grandparents are getting proper care is to have a certified care giver at home. Having a certified one is necessary because, she is properly trained in giving proper medical and non-medical care to elderly people.

When hiring a professional care giver for your parents you should verify the caregiver’s work permit. Is she allowed by the law to work in your country? You will not like to take a risk by hiring illegal worker.

Caregiver should be caring

Finding a certified caregiver is not very difficult, but finding a certified one who genuinely cares for an elderly person is altogether a different story. You will not want to hire a caregiver who doesn’t have genuine interest in your elderly parents.

You should talk to the caregiver before giving her the charge of looking after your parents. While talking, do not just look for what she says, but try to read her expressions and look for small cues in her behavior.

Should be friendly

A caregiver should not only understand the problems faced by an elderly person, but she should also be friendly to him. She should smile often to make the elderly person feel good about him. She should know how to engage elderly in a conversation.

Conclusion

You also need to play a role in home care of a senior, and the first thing you can do is to maintain a record of elderly person’s daily activities. You should also have a health record. These records are often sought by doctors when medical care is required. You must tell the care giver to maintain a daily record of elderly person’s health, daily routine and daily activities. You should check the record book from time to time to see how he is doing. This is must for giving proper elderly health care at home.
