Airline Credit Cards – What To Look For In An Airline Credit Card

Author : Simon Clifton

For frequent fliers, credit card companies have introduced airline credit cards in collaboration with various airlines. These cards offer several unique benefits to the travelers. Although they have been exclusively designed with airline travelers in the mind, choosing an airline credit card that meets your individual need is difficult because not all cards offer the same set of benefits.

Features to look for in airline credit cards

When buying an airline credit card you must look for the following features.

Airline miles and bonus points

The main reason why one gets an airline credit card is to earn points on every dollar spent on airline tickets. Therefore, it is but natural to assume that one should go for the card which gives more points for each dollar spend on the ticket.

Another thing to look at is the number of bonus points one will get should one cross a certain threshold level of expenditure. In your search for the best airline credit cards you will see that there are cards which offer some bonus points (let's say 5000) when the card holder has spent X amount on airline tickets through the credit card. It is but obvious that you should go for the card that offers maximum reward and has the lowest threshold level.

You should also check the process of earning points. Read the document to ensure that you get reward points for all the purchase and not on just air ticket booking, for which the card is designed, primarily.

Points redemption

Airline miles or points in themselves are of no value. Their real value lies in their redemption power. The more redemption options an airline card offers the better it is. This is, probably, the most important thing to look for in an airline credit card.

Check the offer document to see if the card issuing company allows you to redeem the points earned on the credit card for airline tickets, hotel expenses, car rentals, food, etc.

Go for the one which offers the maximum number of choices.

Blackout dates

Generally airline credit cards, or any other cards for that matter, have some blackout dates on which you cannot redeem the points earned by booking tickets using the airline credit card. This is not a good sign because blackout dates effectively means that you will not be able to use the point earned against your expense for vacation in the peak travel season, on weekends and on holidays.

There are credit cards that offer "no blackout dates" option in their airline credit cards. You should always prefer such cards, for they will help you cut your cost on vacations on public holidays or weekends. These are the times when you will most likely go for vacation.

Conclusion

There are many more things like card limit, taxes and fees, and interest rates that you should look at when researching airline credit cards, but when it comes to getting the most value out of an airline credit card, the above given points are the ones that matter.
