A Brief History of Wedding Rings
Many people simply see the wedding rings as just a part of the wedding process and nothing more than that. The thing is though, there is a lot of history to wedding rings and it is something that you might find to be very interesting. The more you learn about the history of wedding rings, the more likely the meaning of them will change for you.
As you already know, wedding rings are usually made from a type of metal and they are worn on the ring finger of the left hand. However, in some cultures, the wedding bands are worn on the ring finger of the right hand. In many of today's weddings, both husband and wife exchange rings. In the past , it was only the wife that would wear the wedding ring in order to let other men know that she was taken already. It was not until the 20th century that it started to become customary for the man to wear a wedding ring as well.
It was actually the American Jewellery Industry that started to campaign to encourage couples to start the practice of the men wearing the wedding band as well.
This campaign started in the later part of the 19th century. With the changing economy and World War II, it was not until the late 1940s that up to 80% of the couples getting married were having the double-ring ceremony. Prior to the Great Depression, the number of couples doing the double-ring ceremony was only at 15%.
To many people, the wedding rings symbolize the eternal love that a couple has declared for each other. Now, there are a lot of people that simply use the wedding rings as part of the wedding tradition or with thoughts that it is nothing more than proper etiquette. But the history of wedding rings does not stop there.
in places such as India, a toe that is worn instead of the wedding ring on the finger . Of course, the toe rings are only for the women. Some still do not wear the wedding ring on the ring finger, but some are now incorporating the toe ring and the ring finger ring.
In other parts of India, such as in West Bengal, iron bangles are worn by the women to show that they are married. In more recent years, a coating of silver or gold has been added to the iron bangle in order to make it appear flashier.
As you can see, whether it is a ring for the finger, the toe or the wrist, the ring symbolizes eternal love and commitment for each other. It may have gone through some customary transformations over the years, but the meaning is generally the same.
