If you have lost your job, you probably have quite a few things to worry about. You wonder how you are going to pay your expenses with no income coming in. You probably are also thinking about good ways to find a new job. Beyond that, you may wonder if you can possibly keep your health insurance.
If you work for a large company, you may be able to keep your group medical plan for several months because of the COBRA laws. However, these policies are expensive, and not everybody will qualify for an extension.
Why do people say that COBRA is expensive. It is because your employer chipped in to pay some of your premiums when you were an employee. Now that you are unemployed, you have to pay the whole thing. This hardly seems fair, but it makes your new premiums much higher. Some families cannot keep these benefits because they have no way to pay for them.
If you have the money, you may also seek an individual medical insurance plan. If your family is fairly healthy, the premiums may be a lot lower than they were for your old group plan. But be sure that the new plan gives you the benefits you need. It may be more limited than the employer plan you were used to enjoying. There are probably dozens of different types of health insurance plans in your local area, so you can find something to fit almost any budget. It just may not be the type of coverage you got used to having.
There are also plans from federal, state, and local governments or hospital systems. These are intended to cover people with low incomes, or those who cannot get any other type of insurance because of a health problem. If you are unemployed, it may be a good time to check these plans you so you do not go without some type of health coverage in case you get sick or injured.
Medicaid is a federal program for very poor people. CHIPS covers kids from low to moderate income families that cannot get medical plans from a job. Otherwise, your county hospital system may have a plan for you to get care at lower prices. There are also some charities and foundations that provide money to help people who suffer from specific health problems. Either way, there is a lot of help out there, but you have to know how to find it!
Stop by for resources that can assist you when you need unempleoyment health insurance. Also learn what to do when you cannot afford health care.
