Organic Foodstuff, Is It Genuinely Beneficial?

Author : Cortney Yoder

Is It Honestly True That Organic Food Can Improve Your Health?

Switch on the TV or take a look at the recent health books and you will notice that the term "organic food" is being widely promoted as the new way to have a healthly life. People involved in the health food trade are making massive profits during this hype as organic food costs more then the non-organic foods found in the shop. Keeping all this in mind, the question needs to be asked; is organic food profoundly beneficial or even necessary for our bodies? Is the high price regarding organic food justified?

Before I proceed I need to explain what is meant by organic. The term "organic" pertaining to food, signifies that it has not been modified unnaturally. Ionizing radiation, artificial hormones and chemically enhanced fertilizers are instances of things that are not used to accelerate or boost the food's growth or quantity. When considering the essential protein foods including eggs, dairy and meat, antibiotics or Growth Hormone (GH) are not given to the animals.

If you want to sell food and want it to be called "organic", there is a requirement that the food has to be in produce for 3 years. For the first two years the fertility of the farm land needs to be built up and only after that are crops allowed to be grown. All these elements contribute to the extra cost of organic food. But the question still demands to be stated; is this all necessary? Are there any extra benefits of organic food?

Many of us appreciate that organic food boasts a more significant nutritional value then regular food. Researchers have found that milk obtained from cows that were only given organic food had about 70% more Beta Carotene, 50% more Vitamin E and contained twice as many natural antioxidants and more Omega 3 then cows that were given chemically enhanced food. Choosing to use organic food will also be good for your general wellness since it contains no chemicals such as insecticides and other harmful substances. Whenever chemicals are added to food, it also increases the number of cancer causing substances which will be prevented by using organic food. Many have said that organic food also has a better taste but that's usually just a personal preference.

In the event that you make a decision to use organic foods, the good news is that its also beneficial for the eco-system. Toxins such as insecticides all combine to have a negative effect on our environment. This can be avoided by using organic food. Pollution is adding to the urgent concern of global warming, however organic farming keeps pollution to a minimum which is great news. Additionally, it is important to be aware that when farm animals are fed on organic food they are also usually treated well so that they will also produce well. Unlike the small cages and the force feeding operations witnessed on many other farms, organically fed animals are generally "free range" and are allowed to walk around in open areas.

Therefore organic foods are great for the environment, your health and also makes certain that the animals on the farms are treated well and not subject to abuse. As with anything thats good there are drawbacks, with organic food its the price, so its up to you to determine whether or not youll benefit from paying more for organic food.
