Tips For Choosing A Divorce Lawyer

Tips for Choosing A Divorce Lawyer:

Ask Friends and Family
A good place to begin your search for a divorce lawyer is with your own friends. It can be difficult to admit to some friends that you are going through a divorce, however your friends can be a great resource for information. Ask the friends that you trust and have been through divorces. Specifically, you want to know if their divorce lawyer advocated for them. You also want to find out if the lawyer explained things well and made the client feel comfortable.

If one of your friends or family members, provides the name of a divorce lawyer, the next thing to do is research the attorney online. You can use Google, Bing or Yahoo, it is probably best to use all three because the different search engines filter results differently. You may find positive or negative feedback about a lawyer online. Keep in mind, no attorney can please every client. Divorces are particularly contentious, in most cases neither spouse is satisfied with the outcome of the case, so just because you read a single negative comment doesn't mean that the attorney is not a good divorce lawyer.

When your on the attorney's web site look for their policy on initial consultations. Some attorneys will meet with you for a few minutes to discuss your case for free or a small fee. You can usually also find out if the attorney specializes in the specific area that are interested in. If you find a lawyer that a friend has recommended or one that appears to have the skills and experience that you need, then go ahead and set up a meeting with them.

When you meet with the attorney, be prepared to get the most out of the meeting. You can write questions for the attorney before hand. This meeting is not intended for you to get specific directions about how you should proceed in your divorce, rather it is a time for you to discuss the basics of your case and how the attorney can help. You will also use this meeting to gauge how you get along with the lawyer. Divorces are stressful situations, you will want to hire a lawyer who you feel comfortable with and can work with.
