Breast Augmentation – Silicone Facts

Author : Jennifer Stone

Breast augmentation is the most talked about cosmetic surgery with everyone wanting a perfect sculpt for their body assets. But in this race of looking good and having the perfect body, one has to get their facts right, before going for a breast enhancement or augmentation surgery.

When breast augmentation is talked about, silicon implants are the first things that come to mind. One should be aware about its facts when they are to be used in the surgery. There have been cases where some implants look hard but massages are very important in this case. The silicon implants are controversial because the leaks from the implants could lead to cancer or autoimmune disease. But the new products are approved by FDA for its safety. But still there are frequent complications scarring, pain and infection, hardening of the skin around implant, wrinkled, ruptured or lopsided implants. There are many cases in which people need to do additional surgeries or remove their implants within 10 years of the implant. It may also be the case that for longer the time a woman has implants, the more is the possibility to experience these complications. There have been cases where implants get ruptured and burst. MRIs can show burst implants and it calls for immediate removal. The long term effects of silicone in the body are uncertain but their leaking is not tagged as health concerns by many plastic surgeons.

In one case, silicones were implanted after a double mastectomy and the patient suffered from fever, pneumonia, breathing problems and chest pain. CT scan showed no problems and doctors reassured it wan not due to implants. But the MRI and biopsy showed a leak in implants and silicone was found in the lymph nodes and lungs which resulted into handicap and lung transplant. So the FDA now suggests MRI every few years for women with silicon implants.
The earlier silicones were made of runny liquid silicone but the new ones used today are made of cohesive gel – like jelly which may ooze out but not run out like oil. But though the silicones are safe, they are prone to fail with age. Around 400,000 women receive implants each year and 80% choose silicon over saline implants and follow the recommendations to get MRI scans every few years to check for silicon leaks.
It is said that the rate of complication can be minimized by choosing an experienced surgeon but the risk remains, all the same. The complications for silicone and saline implants are the same and additional surgeries are very much possible. The young breast implants do not last forever and they may leak and rupture so a re-operation may be needed once in a lifetime.
One should consider all these facts before getting a breast augmentation surgery, for safety and healthy living.
