Hover The Lovely Skies Copter Style But Don't Ignore The Helicopter Insurance

Author : Brad Rodriguez

Helicopters will be the odd flying things that look like a beanie-copter with a tail. They have a tremendous military history as well as history of service-oriented professions. They can be used to fly into areas an airplane cannot access, as they do not need a runway for landing just a clear area away from buildings and trees. Trees are not a helicopters friend. Be sure to purchase helicopter insurance before you do your first dipsy doodle.

A few people prefer a helicopter over a small plane even though the storage capacity is severely limited. Helicopters may fly lower than a small plane, giving site seeing a whole new view. Helicopters are not without their challenges nor are they without their risks.

Helicopters, like just about everything in life, need to be insured. In the event of vandalism or destruction by fire, weather related conditions or crash and burn, insurance will fix, repair or replace the helicopter. Insurance for a helicopter is similar to buying car insurance except the cost is a whole lot more, and it comes under aviation insurance.

You'll find different risks involved with helicopters and airplanes, and the insurance involved is not quite the same. When picking aviation insurance be sure the underwriting company has experience in helicopter insurance. Insurance will depend largely on what you plan to do with your helicopter. Using the helicopter for sightseeing tours will have different insurance needs than a helicopter used as a medical evacuation vehicle or a piece of fire-fighting apparatus. Age and the size of helicopter are also considered when applying for insurance.

Before picking an insurance company to underwrite your helicopter, get hold of a few quotes from other insurance companies. Helicopter insurance may vary widely in premiums and what the policy covers. When comparing quotes, do not just look at the final number, but also look at the coverage you are getting for that cost of the premium. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples and not apples to grapes.

Helicopter tends to be on the expensive side as compared to insurance for an airplane. Parts for helicopters are expensive, and losses tend to be total rather than fixable. Even what may be considered a minor "ding" for an airplane is usually a total loss for the helicopter. From a liability stand point, the rotor presents a serious danger if it strikes something or someone while in motion. You'll find fewer helicopters than airplanes in the sky and the insurance rates are based on statistics. Right now, statistics are not on the helicopters side.

If you are on vacation and plan to take a helicopter tour, check your travel insurance, if you have such a thing, to see if your insurance covers helicopter rides. If you have travel insurance that covers your flight in the event of cancellation, missed flight or disaster that will not cover a helicopter ride unless it is a means of transportation related to your vacation, much like an airplane would be.
