Keeping Your Jewelry Guarded With Jewelry Insurance

Author : Brad Rodriguez

Jewelry insurance covers your valuables from theft, vandalism, destruction and ruin. The most personal things in your life are in danger every time you wear them in public or store them in an unsecured jewelry box. If someone breaks into your house, the thief always searches for cash, jewelry and laptops, pretty much in that order. Intruders know all the hiding places as they invented the majority of of them. Do not compromise your valuables by leaving them uninsured.

Some jewelry may be covered under your homeowners or dwellers insurance plan with a rider for a particular item, but for the expensive jewelry or a collection of jewelry, an individual policy is typically best. When insuring jewelry under a separate policy from homeowners insurance, you will need a written appraisal of the jewelry by a certified jewelry appraiser and gemologist if precious gems are involved and the appraisal must note the current retail value and applicable taxes. The appraisal must be current within 18 months of the start of the policy. As you add to your jewelry collection, those items must be added to the policy to be insured. It is wise to review your jewelry collection and have it reappraised from time to time.

Jewelry insurance may sometimes offer more coverage than a home owner's policy, particularly if the jewelry is beyond a certain financial level. In the event of jewelry theft or destruction, insurance will cover the cost to replace the jewelry even if the sentimental value cannot be replaced. Even though you will have your jewelry appraised, it is best to have the receipt if possible.

You'll find a few questions to ask before deciding upon a jewelry insurance policy. Is the jewelry covered if it is lost or stolen or if it is just lost or just stolen? Will insurance replace the lost or stolen item with a check or will you be required to purchase a similar item at a certain jewelry store? Find out how your jewelry must be documented? With today's technology, the documentation will most likely be photograph and written description, but find out the format for pictures and if a certain document is to be filled out providing the written description. Make sure the jewelry is insured for full value rather than partial value. It may save on the premiums, to only be, insured for partial value but when it comes to making a claim, you will be very happy to collect the full insured value.

A very important question to ask is how to document a lost piece of jewelry? That may be tricky as that is the most common type of lost jewelry fraud there is. The insurance company will provide the necessary paperwork to be filled out and under what circumstances they will accept "lost" jewelry.

When in possession of expensive jewelry, consider keeping it in a safe at home or even a safe deposit box at a bank. Jewelry insurance policies over a certain amount may require jewelry be stored in a safe or the vault at the bank. That will also save on your premiums, as well.
