What Is Your Favorite Education Inspired Movie?

Author : Tyrus Cobb

Education is a controversial issue in itself in today's world. There are so many differing views on how it should be implemented and utilized. Whether people believe it should be privatized, public, home grown, or en masse, education is a fundamental part of human development and its attention is well deserved. With today's technology online education has become more and more popular, especially within the realm of higher education. Online education provides people with direct knowledge without going through less accessible mediums. Yet, even before the internet was created, education has been adaptive and evolving, and this is shown through entertainment just as much as through reality.

In terms of art forms, film has been a far reaching medium by which people attribute their culture and norms. Film has also developed a niche over the years in education based films, such as Coach Carter and Higher Education.

One of the most impactful and inspiring films with regards to education is Dead Poets Society starring a young Ethan Hawk and Robin Williams. The film is an excellent depiction of rigidness within the educational field and the associated downfalls with such a stricture on learning progression. The film follows the development of relations with a progressive teacher, as played by Robin Williams, and his budding, loyal disciples. This teacher is so inspiring to the students with regards to the arts and in expressive forms that they create an extracurricular poetry club. This club becomes a point of contention between both the students and the teacher as pitted against the puritanical administration, representative of an overly conservative educational program that does not promote independent thought and growth.

The film works to provide allegorical references to education as a whole and the generic components that are saddled along with it. The administration in the film uses false motives and ideals that are projected onto the progressive teacher as played by Robin Williams in order to downplay the positive effects he has instilled upon his students and to enhance the appearance of detriment that he has done. The film works to show the lengths that educational programs will go to in order to maintain their rigid ideals and convictions, even in the face of novel and progressive methods of practice that enhance the learning capabilities of eager students.

In addition to the stark allegorical references and the content itself is the aesthetic value of the film's shot. The setting is based on an illustrious private estate in which students are sent by demanding parents in order to get a top notch education in hopes that they will be accepted to lauded universities. The school itself functions as an emblem of possibility within education itself and connotes scholarly poise along with being an avid learner and an ambitious student. Even without the film's themes and messages it works to impart feelings of desire and passion with regards to education and learning to the audience.

Dead Poets Society is an excellent film for all people, but especially for young children and kids. The film can spread awareness and more positive feelings towards education and learning, surely an excellent way to motivate and change the lives of youngsters abound.
