Photovoltaic Panels, The Way To The Future

Author : Marianne Conway

Photovoltaic technology makes use of the sunlight to produce electricity. Installing the system is part of electrician jobs. In order to convert sunlight to electricity, semiconductors are used.

Photovoltaic panels make use of semiconductors that can produce the PV effects. In all likelihood, the material used to make a PV panel is silicon whether in monocrystalline, polycrystalline or amorphous form. Other materials that can be utilized for the panels are copper indium sulfide, cadmium telluride, and copper indium selenide.

The increasing demand for house PV panels these days are spurred by the rising awareness of how fossil fuel can harm the environment and cause climate change. Eco-friendly practices are encouraged to counter the devastating effects of the carbon emissions released by the fossil fuels to the environment.

PV panels are known to be safe and cost effective. It makes use of a renewable, free resource to produce electricity. Sunlight is abundant and easily accessible. The panels do not leak dangerous chemicals.

The panels convert sunlight to electricity at the atomic level. The materials absorb the light photons and free the electrons. Once the released electrons are trapped, volts of electricity are generated.

The PV systems are mounted on the ground or installed on the roofs or walls of the structure. If the panels are installed on the buildings it is known as Building Integrated Photovotaics or BIPV.

One possible reason for the PV panels rising popularity is its sheer simplicity. Once you install the panels, you can harness them immediately. There is no need to constantly monitor, maintain or repair them. The system can last for up to 30 years. Several systems installed in the 1950s as part of the jobs for electrician are still working up to this day.

There is no costly maintenance or repairs required. It functions automatically day and day out. At nighttime it goes on a standby mode on its own.

Before the photovoltaic panels are installed, part of the electrician jobs as well as the structural engineers is to find out if the roof or wall is strong enough to carry the weight of the PV.

The electricity output of the PV panels will depend on several factors such as if the panels are facing the sun directly, the number of panels installed, the kind of panels used and the amount of sunlight getting in. The general rule is every 100 square feet of photovoltaic panels will produce approximately 1kW of electricity.

A single panel usually has a length of 4 feet and 30 inches width. The space on the roof is often adequate to provide for a portion of the electricity requirements of the house.

If the power is used at home, the electricity may equal to 40 percent of the total amount used. It can also cut the bill by that percentage. A typical household normally consumes 20.5 kWh of power everyday. The photovoltaic panels can produce up to 40 percent of this total requirement.
