Rahul Gandhi Pacifies Victims Of Bihar Police Firing

Author : pressbrief in

On July 1, AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi payed a visit to the kin and the family of the four members of the minority community who were killed in a rampant and uncalled police firing in Forbesganj, Araria District of Bihar on June 3, 2011. The leader assured the members of the victims' family that they will be compensated and the injured will be treated. He added that justice will be done and the guilty would be punished.

This gruesome incident took place as the villagers were protesting the construction of wall of a starch factory in the area on the government acquired land. The upcoming factory had raised a wall which blocked the only approach road of the village Bhajanpur to outside world. During the demonstration the police without warning the protestors, opened fire on the crowd, resulting in death of four and leaving 30 injured. A video showed a policeman jumping over the head of a protestor. The policeman was later arrested and charged with murder. In other case when a dead body was received for post mortem, it was found that the man was still alive. This act shows a complete mismanagement and callousness by the district administration.

The state authorities claimed that the villagers were forcibly demolishing the wall. BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi had earlier visited the area to lend support colleague BJP leader connected with upcoming factory. The Congress Party is continuously demanding CBI probe into the firing.

Sitting on a plastic chair in the front yard of a house, Mr Gandhi keenly heard the family of the four victims, which included a pregnant woman and a six-month-old infant in the police firing.

Mr Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Bihar Congress president Chaudhary Mehboob Ali Kaiser, then visited the homes of the nine people who were injured in the firing and promised them help with better medical treatment. After meeting seven-year-old Manzoor Ansari, who received bullet injuries on parts of his face, Mr Gandhi asked his mother, Phulia Khatoon, to prepare for the boy to be brought to Delhi and asked Mr Kaiser to make the necessary arrangements. He asked State Congress President help bring the injured boy Md. Rashid Ansari to New Delhi for treatment.

Last week Congress President Sonia Gandhi had sent a team of party leaders to console and offer relief amount among the victims. The party has given Rs one lakh each to the family of the deceased and Rs 25,000 each to the injured.

Realizing police highhandedness in the case, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered a judicial enquiery but has neither taken action against the erring policemen nor has his government announced any compensation for the hapless victims. The incident has severely hit the popularity of Nitish Kumar administration. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has not yet visited the village to pacify the beleaguered families. The Chief Minister seems to have faced a serious dent in his credibility amongst Muslims and his fa├žade of giving clean administration to Bihar.

Earlier, families of the dead victims visited Delhi and met the national press on June 18 to raise their concern. Ms Shabnam Hashmi of Anhad NGO accompanied them. A video played during the Press Meet showed Bihar police committing unjustified brutalities on the villagers.

The speakers at the press meet highlighted that instead of empowering minorities as per the recommendations of the Sachar Committee Report, attempts were being made to demoralize them by conniving with the BJP and the industrialists to usurp poor people's only asset -- the land.

On June 21 National Commission for Minorities Chairperson Wajahat Habibullah also visited the village and denounced the police action and felt that the issue could have been resolved without the use of force.
