UK Work Permits : A Look At The Application Process

Author : Callum Leslie Walters

When it comes to UK immigration, there are a few things that you will have to keep in mind to ensure a smooth transition into your new life. First of all, a work permit is something that will have to be obtained. If you do not have one, then getting a job is not going to be possible. In most cases, applying for a work permit can be done at the Home Office Border or the Immigration Agency. Keep in mind that there is a two week waiting period.

Sometimes it can take a little longer to get a work permit because vacancies have to be advertised for a certain amount of time. There are some exceptions to this however. If it is a job that is considered to be a shortage occupation such as teachers or people who work in various healthcare professions, then exceptions can be made. This means you can apply for the permit without having to wait out the mandatory advertisement period for the position.

Companies are generally required to be well established before they are able to get work permits for their employees. For companies that have not been around a while, it is still possible to work around this. One of the ways is through the highly skilled migrant program. This program helps workers who are professionals in a certain area to get the jobs that they need, even if they need a permit for it. The good news is, there are alternate programs in place.

While applying for a work permit, it is still possible to visit the UK. The only thing is that you cannot work while you are there until the permit goes through. This does not mean that they cannot do the things that other business visitors are able to do. These things include training, consulting and advising. You can usually do this for about 6 months. During this time, it is important to learn more about the various needs of clients in the area.

As you can see there are some things to consider when immigrating to the UK. Although they are not hard requirements, they must be met before obtaining gainful employment. Be sure you are prepared for the waiting period for your work permit so that you will not be in a tight spot after your move. In many cases it might be best to apply before your relocation is complete. This way it will be progressing as you make other arrangements.
