Divorce Tips For Men - Get Yourself A Good Lawyer

Author : Dena Garcia

Looking out for a lawyer can be difficult when you actually need one. Suggesting a good lawyer can be accomplished by your friends, family and co-workers. Find out whom they have worked with. Also ask other professionals such as your accountant or financial planner, as they often work with lawyers.

You may also try researching through the Internet. Law firm websites, in particular, have a listing of the biographical and professional review of a lawyers work. You can understand your issue better by using the various legal articles and information available online on such websites.

What you want to ask the lawyer may not come easily when you meet the lawyer for the first time. In cases of litigation it is extremely important to find a lawyer that works in your area of concern. One of the things to take note of is how long a lawyer has been practicing and how much expertise he holds. Find out if the lawyer deals extensively with your area of concern.

You must ask the lawyer about the probable outcome and various scenarios associated with the case. See if the lawyer can explain to you the possible complications and probable duration of the case. Always ask about legal fees at the initial meeting with a lawyer. It would be wise to ask your lawyer for a retainer letter when you negotiate the fees.

If your billing will be based only on the hourly rate or also the outcome of the case should be clarified along with the billing cycles. Most clients would ask for an estimate as to the total cost involved in the case, but it is important to note that it is hard to give an estimate for litigations. What work needs to be done on your case is something you must figure out before hand.

Find out if it's okay for you to contact the paralegal and junior lawyers working with your lawyer. Figure out if all correspondence will be sent to you automatically or only when you request for it. Some clients prefer to be updated frequently, and some want to be called only when absolutely necessary. Facsimile and emails are preferred over phone calls by many clients. Office procedures of the like of these can be discussed at the first meeting.

Knowing what schedule is followed by the lawyer can help. Does he respond to calls on the same day? When can you reach him over the phone? Does he work out of town? When does he stay in court?

If you are not satisfied with the answers to your questions at the first meeting, or you do not feel comfortable with the lawyer, never be afraid to meet with someone else. The lawyer and the client have to be able to work as a team, sometimes for years. A lawyer needs to be paid for his time when you meet them for the interview regardless of you hiring them or not.
