What is an Angle Grinder?
Angle grinders are handheld power tools whose main feature is a spinning disc that is used for cutting and grinding. Due to their use of a disc they are often referred to as disc grinders. They are mainly powered by electric but there are number of more powerful petrol powered angle grinders available to buy. These are better suited to larger jobs where more power is needed such as cutting large concrete paving slabs or extra thick piping. There are also compressed air angle grinders but these are less popular than the other two type of disc grinder.

So now we know what an angle grinder is it would be a good idea to find out what they are for and just what they can do. As mentioned earlier their main feature is a spinning disc. This is used for cutting and grinding down objects. The discs can be changed to allow them to work on different materials such as wood, metal, plastic or concrete. You can even use them to polish off surfaces by using a less abrasive disc. This quickly gives your materials a nice smooth finish that would take much, much longer with a piece of sandpaper. You can also use a wire disc to polish metals to give them a finish that looks brand new.

There are lots of companies that make angle grinders and most have a tool to suit each type of user and budget. Bosch, a DIY favourite have a good selection of grinders ideal for the home or professional worker. Draper angle grinders are well regarded for their durability and their extensive range should have something for everybody. Brands like Makita and Einhell have good product line-ups too but are probably more focussed towards the professional market than the home DIY enthusiast.
So if you have decided that an angle grinder is for you it is important to work out exactly what you will be using it for. This is to make sure you get the right one for your needs. There is nothing worse than buying a nice shining new tool only to get it home and find out it can’t do the job you bought it for! Make a short list of the types of jobs you expect to be doing with your new tool and then check them off as you go through the list of grinders available. That way you should hopefully find a tool that perfectly matches your needs.
