Step-by-step Guide To Using A Food Mill

Author : Chris Sturat

A food mill is a handy kitchen device that is designed to grind, mash or puree food. They typically consist of three parts, which is the bowl, a perforated disc, the blade, and a crank handle that holds to the top of the disc which crushes and forces the food into the holes of the perforated disc. The disc can come as a permanent part of the device, or is interchangeable with discs with holes of different sizes. This allows chefs to attain different consistencies of food. Because they can be used with some of the tougher foods as well (not with meat or solid food though), you will need to find one that is solid and strong so it can last long. Learning how to use a food mill is easy if you follow the guide below.

First of all, make sure that the food mill is clean, otherwise, wash it. Then, you will need to prepare the food you want to use with the food mill. To make it easy for the food mill to do its job, cut the food up and then put them into the food mill. Do not put too much food inside otherwise it will be difficult to crank the food. Instead, save the extras for the next round. Change the perforated disc according to how fine you would like your food to be; whereby the bigger the holes, the rougher the food, while smaller the holes, the finer the food will be. Then, once you have decided on which to use, install it back in place and make sure the holding pin is on. Next would be to begin the grinding. Grip onto the crank with your hand to turn and press it down clockwise to begin grinding until the food reaches the consistency you are looking for. What happens when you do that is that the food mill scrapes the food again and again like a food processor. Once all the food is strained, you can turn it anti-clockwise instead. Then, use a scraper to transfer all the food that you have grinded in a separate container.

Once you are done with the food mill, disassemble all the parts according to the manual and thoroughly wash them with soap and water. This ensures that no food gets stuck in between the parts. Knowing how to use a food mill will show you the wonders it can do, such as to make baby food, soup, tarts, pies, and so much more!
