Should You Be Worried About That Skin Tag

Author : Mario Cora

A skin tag can appear in places such as the eyelids, the armpits or even the groin which are all common areas you will find skin folds. For people just noticing that they have one it can be a bit scary at first and there will naturally be some concerns about the danger these hold.

For real concerns about this type of issue do not wait to talk to your doctor about it. All you need to do is bring it to your physicians attention and present them with your questions and concerns. You might be surprised to here than in the majority of cases, a skin tag is usually benign and will never cause any type of complications if it remains in place. You should also know that in some cases, even with the absence of cancer, these tags can still become irritated at times.

Skin tags develop directly from the root stalk of cells and become visible because they have grown on the outside layer of the skin. A mole, on the other hand, is a flat group of cells and is something entirely different. Tags can grow to a significant size but usually aren't seen bigger than the size of a golf ball most of the time.

Having a tag removed at the doctors office is a pretty easy procedure to have done and you often won't even need anesthesia to do so. Both size and location on the body will of course be a determining factor here.

Skin tags can appear on people at any age. Some people get them when they are very young while others do not get them until they are much older. They do, however, tend to appear more often on individuals during middle age. These tags may appear on the face or areas where clothing can rub them which results in consistent irritation and decreased comfort.

As mentioned before, most tags are benign in nature but this doesn't mean you shouldn't bring it to the attention of your family physician. Once your doctor is aware of the issue and knows what your concerns are you can work together to decide what to do next. Keep in mind that if the tag appears in an area that doesn't cause irritation it is simply considered a cosmetic procedure. When this is the case many health insurance plans will not cover the cost of the removal. It is these such situations where you may want to seek out other means of removal that will be cheaper on your wallet.

There are actually several different options when it comes to removal of skin tags. The options available to you will of course depend on size and other factors though. Beyond medical procedures like cryosurgery, ligation, excision and cauterization there is also several home methods and products that can be used as well.

You should heavily weigh all of your options for removal before making a decision, especially if it would be a medical procedure that would be considered cosmetic by your insurance carrier. A home removal can be significantly cheaper in this instance and may be your better option overall if the tag is small and will be easy to get rid of.
