Is It Legal To Grow A Tobacco Plant?

Author : Graham Willett

Cigarettes can be a great relief from stress and other things that may trouble some folks. It is well known that cigarettes are dangerous to health but so is driving a car, walking on ice, and even breathing the air of some places. While they may be a great escape cigarettes can be very expensive. Some have decided to take a stand against high cigarette prices and have taken to growing tobacco at home for personal use and consumption. Before undertaking this task the thought may have crossed your mind as to the legality of growing a tobacco plant.

In short, growing a tobacco plant is not illegal. Many people grow tobacco for ornamental reasons. A tobacco plant will produce very beautiful flowers and can be aromatic. The choice to grow tobacco for strictly ornamental reasons is a good one. Where tobacco growing can be illegal comes in the quantity of tobacco grown.

A typical tobacco plant will produce approximately one hundred grams of tobacco that can be cured and turned into rolling tobacco for smoking. It is advised to grow no more than a year's supply of tobacco when growing tobacco for personal use. This is important. Tobacco growing becomes illegal, in most places when it can be determined that there is more tobacco grown than one person would use in a year. Regardless of how heavy a smoker someone is, it is impossible to convince local officials that growing a tobacco crop that will produce ten years amount of tobacco is for personal consumption.

Growing tobacco should also only be used for personal consumption. It would be tempting to grow tobacco for sale. This is illegal if it is not reported for taxation reasons. If someone wishes to grow tobacco for sale they should consult their local laws and regulations concerning the subject.

In the United Kingdom, tobacco can be grown with ease. The weather is not a barrier and this option (growing tobacco) is available to all who wish to do so. Once again a person should plant only enough tobacco for personal consumption. Do not grow tobacco to the point where a surplus will occur. This should be avoided by closely calculating the reasonable amount expected to consume in a year. This can be done by figuring how many cigarettes would be smoked in a year, determining the weight of the tobacco in the cigarettes and growing about the same amount of tobacco.

When growing tobacco in the United Kingdom it is necessary to consult with local laws that may govern the amount that can be grown for personal use. In addition, growing tobacco may result in taxes, so one should take into account any necessary fees and taxes that may be incurred.

Growing a tobacco plant (or tobacco plants) is not difficult to do and it is not illegal. It can be done nearly anywhere, to include just about every part of the United Kingdom. When deciding to grow tobacco, in addition to the knowledge of growing tobacco, one should check for any regulations governing the growing of tobacco. After this it is necessary to ensure that the right amount is selected for personal use. Once the legal questions have been answered for each individual case, one can engage in the rewarding and enjoyable experience of growing tobacco.
