How Do I Locate Public Domain Books?

Author : Chris Sturat

Books are a collective treasure of knowledge across the ages. From time immemorial, man has sought to pen his feelings and expressions on nearly everything that could be written upon. Papyrus and parchment scrolls which were first used for writing were replaced by books and are now getting replaced by books in the electronic medium.
Public domain refers to the content which is not subject to any copyright or intellectual property rights. A number of books are now available in the public domain, which means that the book is available for free without payment of any royalty. It offers the advantages of accessing books, mainly online, with or without payment of any membership fee. Public domain books are normally available in case of those books for which the copyright has expired.
Books available in the public domain can be accessed online for free or for a nominal fee. They can also be downloaded and accessed offline. A number of web sites provide hyper links to sites which make public domain books available to the general public. These keep getting updated periodically based on the usage pattern and the continuing availability of the public domain book in the linked web page.
It is important to note that only books which are in the public domain can be generally downloaded. The books which are mentioned in web sites or search engines but have valid copy right can only be previewed.
Many search engines also help us to find books based on keyword searches. Their database contains a vast library of e-books in the public domain which can be readily accessed. The quantum of accessibility depends on the back to back arrangement which the search engine may have with the book's publisher.
One of the well known search engine which offers books in the public domain is google. By performing a few easy steps, any user can locate an e-book in the public domain within a few minutes. All it takes is an internet connection to a computer system, any commonly used web browser and text reader software like adobe acrobat. Books in the public domain which can be downloaded can also be sold online or as pay per view sites at a later date.
There are some disadvantages of public domain books as well. Since copyright books are generally not hosted on the public domain, only old books whose copyright has expired are likely to be available on these sites. There are also chances that plagiarism of copy right books may be hosted in the public domain.
So take attention all book worms. There is now an easy way to access old classical books and fill up your e-library.
