What Do You Mean By ExFAT?

Author : Chris Sturat

exFAT is a proprietary file system that was developed by Microsoft. It was primarily developed by Microsoft for the purpose of handling the file system need of mobile storage devices like USB Flash Drives. It was also developed for use in their Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Operating System. This file system is the successor to the FAT32 file system and the best feature about this file system is that it can be implemented with minimal effort.

exFAT Advantages

The exFAT file system has certain features that offer a certain advantages:

? Users can adapt to the system very quickly
? A single directory has the capacity to handle more than 1000 files
? It can be used in future operating systems
? The process of storage occurs quickly and efficiently
? If the size of the storage device enhance, the file system is robust enough to handle the increasing capacity
? The size of a file can be more than 4GB
? It allows easy copying for files between desktop and other external devices
? It has the capability to handle files of large size, thus enabling ease of handling for such files.
? It has the capacity to store more than 4000 raw images and more than 100 HD movies in one single directory
? It makes use of free space bitmaps for the purpose of free space allocation and also reducing disk fragmentation.

What are the advantages that exFAT offers over FAT32?

Though FAT32 offered significant features, it was not able to handle the higher requirements that arose with progressive and advanced systems that came out later. exFAT addresses such shortcomings, primarily those of file limits and file size. The format of the file system is such that it can be enhanced to handle disk sizes with even 512 terabytes of storage space. The exFAT file system makes use of 64 bits to describe file size, which means that applications that require large files can be accommodated by this file system.

Drawbacks of exFAT

exFAT offers significant features, but it is not without certain minus points. This file system can be implemented only if the Windows operating System installed in the device where it is to be installed has service packs that support it. Companies that want to use this file system in their products have to purchase a license fro Microsoft for this purpose. Microsoft has still not release the system's file specification.
