Author : robin brain

The field of sales is vast, bigger than what a common man perceives. The requirements in this segment create many job opportunities which are interdependent on each other. One such important post is the sales managerial post. The entire line of sales work on co-ordination and the workflow of a sales manager is no different.

The basic job responsibility of sales managers is to handle their team. The sales staff (team members) reports to a sales manager. A sales manager directs and supervises them. Training the staff also comes under sales managers' duties. Though, in many companies, the training aspect is often handled by specialized trainers or senior sales staff.

One of the most important duties of a sales manager is to coordinate the entire operation of the sales department. They do so by analyzing the market situation, making plans, determining customer based needs, reviewing previous sales volumes, pricing schedules and working as per company goals.

They are also required to divide territories to sales team members, help them to perform and keep evaluating their progress. Sales managers are mostly considered as the brand ambassadors of the company, as they handle many territories of business. Often, they attend business conferences and other presentations on behalf of the company.

Educational Aspects

There are many state universities and even private institutions which offer different courses in management. After the courses, a good experience in sales and marketing would make for a good sales manager's resume. Technical fields including IT also have the scope of sales managers, so people with a combination of bachelors in technical fields and masters in business administration (and related experience) would make good sales managers.

Career Growth

Sales managers can move on to become general managers, divisional heads, vice presidents and higher roles. Qualities needed to be a better sales manager include better decision making, work delegation and planning apart from conventional hard work.

Lastly, the field of sales accommodates a considerable amount of stress, but the pay package and the career scope is exceptional. The field of sales is vast, bigger than what a common man perceives.
