The Dangers That Black Mold Poses For Your Family And Your Finances

Author : Kelsey Libby

Among the things which cause the 'sick building syndrome' is a fungus that is commonly known as black mold. It is predominantly encountered on floors, walls and ceilings that are exposed to wetness or moisture. It thrives in an environment with a relative humidity of 55 % or above. The fungus propagates itself by means of spores which it spews out into the surrounding air. When black mold is encountered in the outdoors, the spores can be carried along with the wind for up to miles from where it originally came from.

The danger of inhaling spores

When black molds are found within a house, they can fill the environment in that house with millions of invisible and undetectable spores. These spores contain poisonous substances that affect the constitutions of animals and people who inhale or ingest them. Most of the time, they are absorbed by inhalation and that accounts for the fact that the lungs are the most seriously affected by the poison. In mild cases of poisoning, the person's mucus membranes will be inflamed. These membranes include those in the nose, the throat and the lungs. Therefore people who have inhaled the spores of the black mold will begin to sneeze and display symptoms akin to the common cold. The person may also turn feverish and display symptoms of fatigue. The manifestations are very similar to allergies. In fact, for a long time in the past, people did not think the spores of the black mold were lethal.

It was not until the death of infants in Cleveland, Ohio was associated with the presence of black mold colonies in their homes that doctors had some inkling of the seriousness of black mold poisoning. If a person inhales a huge amount of spores and is exposed to them for a long time, he can develop bleeding in his lungs. That in turn can cause complications in other parts of the body due to the presence blood components in the tissues of the body. This is what normally leads to the internal bleeding to become fatal.

The dangers of renting houses without inspecting them

On the other hand, if you are contemplating to rent an apartment or a house, one of the important things for you to know is whether the building is not infested with colonies of black mold. For this purpose, it becomes a necessity to hire the services of mold experts. You need to have the building you are proposing to rent examined thoroughly. This can save you from a lot of trouble later on.

If after renting a place you suddenly discover that it has black molds, you may have a difficult time convincing the owner to have it cleaned up. The reason for that is because black molds are virtually impossible to get rid off and the best that the landowner can do is to have it mopped up regularly. the other alternative will be to replace the structure affected with new material. That is obviously an expensive option that many owners will not undertake.

You could try to exert pressure on him by suing him in court. Most building owners are immune to this also. The litigation process can take years and by that time, your state of health will have deteriorated from the exposure to the poisonous spores, unless you took the proper measures to protect yourself. Most of the time it will be best to try to come to an arrangement with the owner to the effect that you will desist from suing him if he will refund your money so you can look for other quarters.
