Heartbreaker Fashion

Author : Callum Asterman

Bad boys are not something they teach young lads to aspire to, at home or in school, but in reality they were just a group of everyday lads who liked to push the boundaries of behavior, speed around in souped-up motor cars and felt obliged to show a bit of tough bravado whenever there were females around. But cast in roles on the silver screen, these typical working class boys would have the girls blushing, feinting and casting admiring glances. Most people can name a few bad boy heroes; James Dean, Errol Flynn and Steve McQueen capture the image and were the real heartbreakers of their time. You could also count on Henry Winkler in Happy Days, but he was purely a caricature, which of course means he was more realistic than any of them and even though the series was hugely popular, it came two decades after the original stars became famous.

Elements of the look seem as if there are here to stay forever. If we say jeans and a tight white T-shirt, you might wonder if style has developed at all in the last 50 years (and you'd be ignoring the 60s and 70s completely). Sunglasses have been a must-have item ever since too, Ray Bans then but also Prada now, the loafers and finally the classic black leather jacket. The jacket is probably the most difficult part to pull off these days. There are so many badly styled, cheap-looking fake alternatives around you need to tread very carefully. The leather jacket has lived on through so many unbelievably tasteless eras that you need a good eye to spot a good, original cut, but aimed for the older look of a bike-style jacket of the 1950s and it may just work. If you're hitting the vintage clothing stores soon, shop around, treat price as a guide and consult an expert..

The biker jacket, as it is practically known, angled at the bikers lean, starting central at the bottom and ending roughly where the shoulder meets the neck. Without this type of zip, the bad boy look will never work no matter how great your other items may be. A couple of zip-up pockets are fine, and the sleeves also need a zip ending just below the elbow to accommodate a pair of biker gloves just in case you do get the complete look of the Harley or Indian.

So if you want to dress in that fifties heartbreaker way, you just need to think "USA" and emulate the bad boys of America, and once you've perfected the attitude and worked out how to adopt it in every part of your life, work, rest and play, there's only one further consideration. Transforming your hairstyle with some iconic Brylcreem, because without the slick, glossy hairstyle, the whole edifice of 50s swagger just looks wrong. So it's not just about the clothes after all.
