Designing And Setting Up A Classroom

Author : Callum Leslie Walters

Classroom design is a key part of creating any good educational establishment. After all, no one wants to learn in a boring classroom, do they? Our guide has some useful classroom design advice. The seating arrangements are probably one of the most important aspects of any classroom. You could choose to have the students all facing the blackboard at the front, or alternatively position the desks towards the center of the room so you can make use of the space.

Another important facet of classroom design that you should spend some time thinking about is the furniture you need. If you are intending that the chairs and tables should last a long time then it's a good idea to get items that can be easily cleaned. This will also be useful if they need to be wiped down in the event of misuse. If you think you might need the whole space, then it can be a good idea to get chairs that can be stacked around the edge.

You should also take steps to make sure the classroom has a welcoming atmosphere that students feel comfortable in. You can do this by including interesting design accents or flashes of color to brighten things up through your color scheme. As a general rule, though, the color scheme of educational facilities should be largely neutral. Neutral colors never go out of style, which means your classroom should stand the test of time as well as creating a calm environment to learn in.

Student displays can also be a great way to brighten up the room, particularly if you use artwork. This can be a brilliant means of showcasing the achievement of the students whether you work in a college, high school or elementary school. It will make the design of the classroom much more interesting and bright. You could also provide an introduction to a variety of topics taught over the semester by putting up fun, informative posters that make learning more interesting.

One final, really important aspect of classroom design is the storage solutions. Built in cupboards can be a good idea for health and safety reasons, as can sturdy cabinets and a lockable desk at the front of the room. Any storage with a lock should only be accessible by key, trusted individuals. This will help you to store all the textbooks and teaching materials you need - while the students may have lockers for their personal belongings, you'll still have to store things in the classroom.
