The Best World Book Day Costumes

World Book Day is becoming increasingly popular in schools across the country. It is a time where children are encourage to get excited about reading and learning from books that have stood the test of time and is still influencing and inspiring many new writings and modern fiction that has captured the imagination of millions.

Children are encouraged to read through a multitude of activities and initiatives spread throughout the course of the day and are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite fictional or historical character.

Having children dressed as their favourite characters can really help them get more actively involved in what they are reading or learning at the time. So if your child is currently learning about the Tudor period in their school syllabus, why not have your child dressed as one of the favourite characters from that time? With their knowledge of the time, and if asked questions about their costume, they are sure to feel confident, which could encourage them to learn more intensely about another time period.

If you are finding it hard to think of a costume your child could wear to Book Day, why not look through some of these suggestions? You never know these suggestions could help spark a few ideas or could provide you with exactly the costume you are looking for:

Historic Costumes

Medieval – This was the time where history made its mark; The Battle of Hastings is but one event that has shaped the way Britain is today. All boys want to be soldiers, so getting them all dressed up in their medieval armour is perfect for World Book Day.

Roman – The Romans where one of the greatest inventors, soldiers and politicians, so why not let your child know how it feels to be one of the greats. This is also a great opportunity for your daughter to dress like a goddess; let’s face it why would you want to be a princess when you can be goddess?

World War 2 – This is one of the most popular syllabus’ taught in schools, and with such a great piece of history comes some fantastic costumes to wear. Have your child dressed as an evacuee for the day and let them tell stories of how they were brought into another town and home away from the terrors.

Modern Character Costumes

Alice in Wonderland – Although an old story, written in 1865 the modern film adaptation of the book has created a new take on the characters we have gotten to know so well. With the film recently coming out and being a box office hit, Alice and her friends have are reliving new found popularity.

Disney Princess – Walt Disney is known for creating such lovable characters and stories that whole family can enjoy, so why not let your daughter dress as her favourite princess? There are so many to choose from including Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Belle.

Fairy tale and Folklore Costumes

Red Riding Hood – This is one of the most famous fairy tales, told as a bedtime story. The story of a little girl dressed in a red cape visiting her grandmother, who has been eaten by the big bad wolf has stood the test of time and is still known as one of the greats. Perfect for World Book Day.

Robin Hood – Folklore doesn’t get better than this. Let your little boy dress as the heroic outlaw and your little girl dressed as Maid Marion and let the story unfold. This is a perfect costume theme for World Book Day and your child will instantly fall in love with their costume.
