World Book Day Costumes

Author : Dan Whitehouse

Every year World Book Day is getting bigger and better, more schools are getting involved in the special day and more children want to be a part of it. It is a fantastic day where children are encourage to get excited about reading and what they can potentially learn from books.

There is a wide range of initiatives and activities for the children to get involved in and at the end of the day are presented with a £1 book token which entitles them to £1 off the book of their choice or to redeem it against a special World Book Day book, which is published and priced £1 especially for the day.

Not only does this day teach the children of the participating school what can be learnt and how important and fun reading is, it actively gets them involved with the characters that are portrayed. This is achieved by getting the children to dress up as their favourite character from their favourite book.

This World Book Day costume can be inspired from ancient period such as Egypt or Roman, or maybe from the medieval era or Victorian period. These fancy dress costumes can also come in the form of a popular modern fictional character, or character from an old story. There are many costumes out there and themes to decide upon it can either be wondrous because you know what you child is looking for or it can be a head scratcher as too much choice is sometimes not always the best thing.

If you are finding it hard to think of a costume your son or daughter would love to wear, why not look through some of these suggestions. They could spark a few ideas or could provide you with what you are looking for:

Period Dressing

Victorian – This theme of book day costume could be ideal for your little girl or boy. Just imagine them walking into school wearing a smart looking suit or dress. You daughter could even pay a tribute to Queen Victoria herself.

Tudor – If you like the thought of dressing your child as a historic character, why not draw some inspiration from the
Tudor period? This could be the perfect time to get your child interested in Britain’s history, especially if they will be or are learning about King Henry VIII in their school syllabus.

Shakespearian – There is no poet or playwright like William Shakespeare and so many marvellous characters to choose from. Dressing as William himself or one of this many characters could really get your child excited about the ways the English language has changed over time.

Fictional Characters

Wizard of Oz – Who didn’t love watching the Wizard of Oz when they were growing up? Even now, children of all ages are glued to their television watching and listening to the enchanting story because it is such a timeless classic. They are many characters to dress your children in, from the cowardly lion to Dorothy.

Harry Potter – He has become the modern day hero, who every little boy wants to be like. This is also a great opportunity for your daughter to dress like the heroine Hermione Granger and see how many spells she can work her magic with.

The Chronicles of Narnia – With the new film adaptations of this classic masterpiece by C.S. Lewis it is no wonder why this is set to become a popular costume choice for World Book Day. Your child can dress as one of the Pevensie children; Susan, Lucy, Edmund and Peter or Alsan or even the white witch.
