Check Out North Greenwich, Which Has Been Through An Enormous Redevelopment Recently And Turned Certainly One Of London's Best Holiday Locations!

Author : Michal Nowak

The peninsula sits in the London Borough of Greenwich. Previously referred to as Greenwich Marshes[1] and as Bugsby's Marshes, it evolved into called East Greenwich as it formulated in the 19th century, nevertheless is frequently at this point called North Greenwich because of the naming of the North Greenwich underground station. That shouldn't be mixed up with North Greenwich on the Isle of Dogs, at the north part of a previous ferry coming from Greenwich. The peninsula's northernmost place on the riverside is known as Blackwall Point, and this may have led to the name Blackwall Peninsula oftentimes being employed in the later 20th century.

Points of interest include The Dome (also recognised by the current business brand The O2 and in the past the Millennium Dome) and the southern end of the Blackwall Tunnel, but the region is being considerably redeveloped.

Public along with private investment decision since the early 1990s has introduced about a number of impressive adjustments in the Peninsula's topography. In 1997 English Partnerships, the countrywide regeneration agent, invested in 1.21 sq kilometres (300 acres) of disused land on the Peninsula. The agent's investment decision of above ?225m has made it simpler for to increase the transportation network and generate brand new houses, business area and community amenities and to reopen access to parkland along the riverbank.

Also to the building of the Millennium Dome, new highways were developed on the eastern area of the Peninsula in expectation of new developments. Fresh riverside paths, cycle tracks and public artworks have been also designed. The primary 2 phases of Greenwich Millennium Village is an expanding non commercial development, together with the Millennium Primary School, a professional medical center, a nature reserve and affiliated training centre. A Holiday Inn motel had been also designed in the area, and Greenwich Yacht Club was moved to a new site east of the Dome.

North Greenwich metro station on the Jubilee Line opened up in 1999. It's among the biggest London Underground stations and also has a bus station. The QEII Pier offering commuter boat support to some other areas of London, both east and west, is based on the Thames simply just to the east of the underground station.

In 2004 outline planning permission was granted for more large-scale redevelopment of the place, which include about 10,000 further properties, a number of million square feet of business space and the transformation of the Millennium Dome in an indoor arena, renamed The O2. Just south of The O2, a brand-new public square is constructed. On the east part of this place, a new campus for Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication is under development (2009) and scheduled to open in fall 2010. South-east of the square, the 6 floor 14 Pier Walk building houses offices for Transport for London.

South of these buildings is a significant non permanent development hosting the David Beckham Academy sports college. Plus, roughly 400m further south, is the Pilot Inn tavern, certainly one of the earliest remaining buildings on the Peninsula.
