Poker Tournament Strategies – Do You Know When To All In?

Author : Alex Bannon

However much success you have already had playing poker tournaments, whether you’ve never won a tournament before, have got a bit of money or even if you’ve already won a tournament, I know that you, like me, will love this information on a little secret I found on when to go all in.

The fact of the matter is, too many players go all in at the wrong time, and they lose for it. And they don’t’ just lose a few chips, or the pot, they lose the tournament. They buying is gone, it’s all over. It’s almost amazing when it happens. One moment you are deep in the tournament, the next, you are stunned wondering what the hell happened as you drag your sorry self outta there.

The Dangers Of All In Poker Tournament Strategies

Poker tournament strategies requiring a lot of all ins, or relying on all ins to double up in order to get ahead, are not the cream of the crop. They are dangerous. Sure, they might win sometimes and you might get lucky with them, but over the long term they just don’t have what it takes to survive.

For started, when you all in you risk everything you got. Secondly, because of the nature of poker a random card could drop on the river and you could be out.

One of my readers emailed me through a hand he played. He did nothing wrong in this hand he actually played quite well in that tournament, but it’s a good example of how even the best of players can have luck against them.

1- Him, pocket 9-9. Opponent, J-10u
2- Flop drops 9-5-2r. Bets escalate to all-ins by both players
3- Turn is 8, River is 7
4- His set loses to a straight

Now, he did the calcs and had a 91.8% chance of winning. His opponent only 8.2%. But he still lost.

Big Pot All In Poker Tournament Strategies

These random events are unavoidable. But a more effective way to win with all ins is to not have to go to the showdown. If you get your opponents to fold you can win without as much risk.

When the pot is getting big that is when you want to be going all in. Once the pot has grow to about half the average sized stack at the table that is the time to go in. Of course you must definitely think you have the best hand. If you think you have the best hand and the pot is growing that big go for it. Most times your opponents will fold.

The effectiveness of this will rely on your own skill of knowing if you have the nuts or not, but even for the newest of players it is quite easy to realise when you are a shoe in to win.

Imagine how much better it would be to add a massive 50% to your stack by moving all in and having your opponents fold. Think about how much more confident and powerful you feel from leaning this information. And realize that you need to learn more about poker now to protect yourself and increase your chances of success.
