It seems everyone is talking about some kind of liver detox diet to detoxify our bodies from harmful toxins accumulated over time from food additives, pesticides, air conditioning, plastics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals around us.

When not properly discharged these toxins collect and over time can be very harmful, causing a number of different conditions; even life threatening diseases. So the question is; how can we safely eliminate these unwanted substances from our bodies?

The answer involves the largest organ in our bodies; the liver. One of the liver's main responsibilities is filtering toxins. Most of the time it does an excellent job coping with our highly salted, preserved and flavored lives, but add paint fumes, air conditioning fumes, plastics - I could go on ... the liver can't keep up.

Today there are many types of body detoxes to shift toxins from our liver and our bodies. Some diets, like juice fasting, are short term healthy detoxes.

But if you are looking for a longer term solution then you should look to organic foods and use them every day.

Going organic is vital in helping your liver detoxify. Organic fruits and vegetables put less strain on your liver because there are no chemicals or pesticides to filter out - leaving your liver free to get on with eliminating other toxins from your system. Without chemicals, pesticides or excessive fertilizers in the way your body can get nutrients it needs to help you function, stay fit and young. Here are a few fruits and vegetables that are great liver cleansing foods.

Roots

Beetroot and dandelion roots are valuable in any liver cleansing diet. Beetroot contains betaine to protect the liver from alcohol and it also thins bile, helping it flush out of the body more easily.

Dandelion roots contain insulin which stimulates liver function. Dandelion sounds like some exotic flower but today dandelion roots are easy found fresh at your local market or as organic teas. Both are a great addition to any liver detox diet.

Citruses

Oranges, lemons and limes are also great for detoxing. An proven detox tip is to drink a glass of warm water with squeezed limes or lemons every morning before breakfast. Citruses stimulate the production of glutathione which eradicates toxins from the body. Lemon is also one of the most alkaline foods in the world and helps neutralize acid in your system. Most people are acidic, so do yourself a favor and start this ritual tomorrow - you'll soon feel the difference.

Greens and Grains

Green leafy foods contain magnesium. The liver needs this enzyme producing nutrient to break down toxins while the chlorophyll from green leafy veggies purifies the blood.

Oats, chick peas, millets, wheat and other whole grains foods contain B vitamins which are vital for your liver detox. Vitamin B1 minimizes the effects of alcohol, smoking and heavy metals. Vtamin B2 produces glutathione. Vitamin B3 and B4 are necessary to breakdown other toxins. These are just a few liver cleansing foods your body needs to keep your body in great shape.

Detoxification is more than minimizing toxins in foods - it all about being healthy inside and out in your body and in your mind. And while organic foods will not solve your other problems - with a healthy body it is a great place to start.
