Parks For Kids Of All Ages

Author : Damian Higgens

Most tweens and teens don’t find the monkey bars and sandboxes of children’s playgrounds especially appealing (or won’t admit it if they do). But adding even modest sports facilities to existing children’s parks or open spaces can really make a difference in whether those middle-through-high schoolers feel their community cares as much about them as they do about the slide and swing-set crowd. Whether your group is planning a new all-ages municipal park or a not-so-large play area for a church or daycare facility, adding basketball hoops, a baseball backstop or soccer goals can really make the recreation area more appealing to all ages. These sports are as popular among youth today as they were twenty, fifty, even a hundred years ago.

Playground basketball equipment has improved from the days of the wooden backboard and rope net, and so choosing what to install requires you consider not only the sizes and ages of potential players but also durability, appearance and even noise factors. Basketball hoops come with poles of various heights. The backboard and hoop components can be fixed or adjustable, with rectangular or fan-shaped backboards made of cast aluminum or steel. The basketball hoops themselves may be single or double-rim, with steel or nylon nets of various colors.

Softball and baseball are equally popular, and youth can enjoy safe, impromptu pick-up games, especially if their community park has a softball or baseball backstop available. Yes, they can play without the backstop as long as there’s enough space, but unless they are playing with soft foam or plastic balls and bats, safety is a concern when there’s no protective steel net for catching foul balls and wild pitches (or just plain missed fastballs).

Once your playground sports improvements are complete, don’t forget to give credit where it’s due. Professional recreation equipment companies can create customized, durable and colorful park signs that provide information on playground hours and safety rules and give credit to those whose efforts resulted in this addition to your community.

After your community organization does put in basketball, baseball or soccer facilities, you just may also notice a whole lot more very tall “kids” out there playing ball with their children. And that wouldn’t be such a shame, would it?
