The most frightening medical emergency I've encountered in years of travel abroad involved a young Frenchwoman who, as was later diagnosed, was suffering an appendicitis attack in Afghanistan. In the middle of an empty desert, her pain began. In instances like these, there is no proper medical care available in the area but still, the number of Americans who love to visit remote places in the world still increase.
In the middle of nowhere, the bus full of Afghans suddenly broke down just a couple of hours out of Kandahar. A westerner companion of the Frenchwoman approached me and I could tell that she definitely was worried. She showed me the Frenchwoman stretched out in the back seat who was suffering from a stomach pain. With the use of a wet handkerchief, they placed it on the Frenchwoman's forehead to temper the day's searing heat.
Trucks headed towards Kabul rarely pass but after an hour or so, when passengers noticed a truck, they immediately hopped in even if it wasn't going near Kabul. A European car which I was able to flag down came on time when the Frenchwoman was in so much agony. A young Swiss couple was inside who immediately agreed to take the two French travelers to Kabul. After a few moments of waiting, another bus came which was able to accommodate us, including I and the remaining passengers. In the hotel where I was staying, the Frenchwoman's companion visited to thank me. In Kabul, she and the Swiss had contacted the French Embassy, which directed them to a hospital where her friend underwent an immediate appendectomy. The woman with appendicitis was fine but still was shocked by the close call.
The safe and international road travel of Maryland based association can provide travelers with risky road conditions in 60 foreign countries. Depending on which country, it has its own road reports on the probability of an animal crossing the road, accident prone areas, the hazards of driving at night and different ways of driving practices. It is more perilous to rent cars and buses for there is lack of safety standards.
The association was founded in memory of a 25 year old Bethesda medical student killed in a bus accident in Turkey. Egypt, Kenya, South Korea, Turkey and Morocco are the countries with the most dangerous roads according to the non-profit organization accident statistics. Some countries like India might be on the list but does not provide statics. In effect of the association's persuasiveness, each country now has its own road hazard information in the consular info sheets implemented by the US State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs. Considering having a health insurance and a medical evacuation policy would be of a good thing. You are obliged to take care of your own expenses if ever you become ill or are injured but the US Embassy can help you look for a medical care. It could cost you thousands of dollars if from a remote place to an emergency hospital, you are evacuated by air. You first have to know what kind of medical service does your health insurance cover before going abroad according to the State Department and you also have to carry an insurance policy identity card as a proof that you're an insurance holder.
The Social Security Medicare is not subsidizing the treatment expenses of senior citizens if they are treated outside the country but the American Association of Retired Persons is capable of covering the expenses. Some firms are able to sell medical evacuation insurance which is offered on per trip or annual basis. Insurance is sold directly by the company and is also sold by the travel agents.
If ever the worst happens, call the nearest US Embassy. Medical facilities and a list of local doctors are the two things which the embassy could provide you with. The embassy personnel will still take steps to assure that Americans get the best medical care. It is those most Americans who dare to visit remote places are the ones benefiting this. Proper treatment, a better facility and friends or relatives are the three things that an accident victim in a foreign country needs which are monitored by the officers.
