Upgrade Those Legacy Applications With A FileMaker Solution

Author : Damian Higgens

Companies hang on to systems like collectors hang on to old coins, pouring money and resources into keeping these applications running despite the fact that support, the hardware platform or the operating system have all passed beyond the life span. Some of these systems don’t actually run a modern database software so that a reporting tool can actually extract the data. Instead, a developer trained in that unique system creates reports to get the information out.

These aging systems are often expensive to replace. There is a chance that an off the shelf solution can fit the technology and business needs, but these implementations are often expensive, and the conversion of existing data is the most expensive aspect of these projects.

A FileMaker solution is a much better approach than other custom developed software. A custom developed solution using .Net, Java, or C++ will require the development of user interfaces, data access calls and database structures. A FileMaker Pro solution has all of these development features prebuilt. The FileMaker developer simply mocks up the screen with the environment’s easy-to-use screen and function creation tools. As the screens are created, the database is automatically constructed without the need to know a specific database technology like Oracle or SqlServer.

The real efficiency of a FileMaker solution comes from the power of the FileMaker database tools. Instead of creating scripts to read data files into the system, the software reads the data files just like importing data in excel, and it creates the database. Then the application can link right to the imported data and within just a few clicks the entire database is converted. This makes creating a prototype and testing its functionality quick, and completing the entire process is accomplished at incredibly low prices.

Because of the number of already developed solutions called FileMaker Pro plugins, customers can download these solutions and add features to their custom applications with a few clicks of the mouse. With other application environments, adding custom code or upgrading the software means downtime or long upgrade cycles.
