Discover Why You Must Do Your Research Before Buying A Pedigree Puppy.

Author : keith deans

Purchasing a pedigree puppy can be an absolute minefield when you are dealing with dog breeders unless you do your research first and make sure you go to a creditable one. As in all walks of life there are good and bad and dog breeding is no exception to the rule.

Before you decide to buy your puppy just ask yourself - can you afford to have a dog as it isn't just the expense of buying a pedigree pup but also the ongoing upkeep such as food, vets fees and pet insurance?

Is your house large enough for the dog? A cute puppy may not seem like any size at all but if you decide to buy one of the larger breeds it will soon outgrow a small house.

Do you have the time and commitment to look after your new dog? Exercise, training and grooming are everyday tasks and should be seen as a fun activity rather than a chore.

So you have concluded that you are suited to having a dog as a pet so do some research and look for a reputable breeder to purchase your puppy from.

Not all breeders are kind to their animals and in fact many of the so called puppy mills have little interaction with their dogs which does not make for a happy healthy puppy. You can still help a poorly started puppy to have a better life but it is better to use reputable breeders when you are paying a lot of money.

Some revealing statistics show that around 8,000 people across the world decide to breed a dog every day yet over 90% of these breeders actually lose money. This probably has a lot to do with the fact that they do not know what they are doing!

The only way to be successful in breeding dogs is to have happy healthy puppies. Good breeders don't sell their puppies to the first person who shows up with cash in hand. Too often, gullible people buy puppies from puppy farmers, or sometimes neighbours who breed their dog to make a little extra money. Too often, the result is puppies in poor health or with temperament issues that may not be detected right away.

A good pointer of a legitimate breeder is one who keeps the puppies inside with the family rather than all crammed together in inappropriate conditions out side. You can also judge the environment quite quickly and if there is tension or aggression then the puppies will pick up on it and behave accordingly.

An obvious tip is to see how the puppies react to you when you visit the kennels or home of the breeder. If the puppies shy away from you or appear nervous or fretful then the chances are that they are not being handled well and will not make good pets.

To sum up, be very finicky and careful when choosing a breeder. We have outlined some of the pitfalls involved when choosing a pedigree puppy but this is just scratching the surface and you need to know much more before you part with your hard earned cash.
