Wedding videography is possibly one of the most challenging aspects of video production (in terms of getting the right exposure, framing, audio, etc). Everything from the location to the lighting is mostly out of your hands. There are no re-takes, the events occur around you in real-time allowing only one chance to get the shot. The standards have been increased over the last few years which could be due to market forces or even the increasing competition levels but whatever the reasons behind it, current wedding videographers have raised the creative bar to the limits and taken the simple wedding video into a completely different area.
Wedding videos can still be recorded like a live event, but the birth of the contemporary wedding video has begun. In other words the wedding video has developed into a dramatic event. There are now new up and coming video companies who specialise in ultra-modern wedding DVD productions that are looking more and more like mini short films. This new generation of wedding videographers pride themselves as creative directors (encapsulating a visually rich and engaging vision of your day’s events). This is usually achieved with film like colour grades angled artistic shots, and polished editing.
However, despite this influx of new sharp and stylish technology, wedding videography is still a challenge, because there is a lot going on and there is a lot of pressure. These days videographer’s utilize intense camera angles and cutting edge camera movements (some even done with dollies, steadicams and cranes), mixing this with formal shots and complex editing. Your wedding becomes less of a live event and is completely transferred into a production with a distinct narrative flow. A skilled videographer will use all the means at his disposal to enliven your wedding film but needs to learn the basic fundamentals.
If you’re a videographer reading this then best way to tackle all aspects of the day is to plan your shoot to the finest detail. However with a wedding video, it is not always possible to have an exact plan so you need to cover yourself. Meet with the bride and groom as far in advance as possible and discuss the venue and their requirements. Will there be any unusual aspects to the ceremony or reception? (style of the wedding, schedule, any special events etc). You will find that having as much information as possible ahead of time will help you anticipate any changes and allow you to concentrate more on the filming side and being creative.
This creative freedom was not as easy in the older days of videography as cameras were bulky, required a lot of lighting, had noisy pictures, terrible colour saturation and used microphones which recorded mono sound. Many wedding videos weren't edited in post production and those that were, were very rough and tacky. Whereas nowadays, videographer’s work with the most up-to-date technology to ensure that they can work innovatively and efficiently. This is helpful as wedding videography is about subtlety and it’s about documenting the day. The job of the wedding videographer is comparable and yet completely different to that of the wedding photographer. Whilst the photographer needs to make themselves visible, the videographer needs to disappear into the background. This allows them to work effortlessly and concentrate on the little bits of detail, capturing all of the finest parts of your special day in an unobtrusive and documentarian style.
