Harmful Chemicals Used In Pest Control - Crackdown By Government

Author : Alan Carson

The pesticide industry has stated that they will support the natural methods of pest control as well as teaming up natural pest control with chemicals to keep crops safe from invaders, even though they are skeptical about the success of the government's efforts in trying to force natural pest control on farmers. Representing corporations which create or mix ninety percent of all American pesticides presently vended on the market, the National Agricultural Chemicals Association claims that integrated pest control might change into a practical means of eliminating pests which endanger the U.S. food supply.

The president of this association states that the time may be right for natural pest control methods to be used, and they support any form of pest control that is proven to work. Accepting that it is their responsibility to develop new environmentally safe pest control techniques.

But, we are against the employment of the regulatory procedures to make pest control directions be placed on pesticide packaging. It seems that educational and demonstrational methods have met with greater success in the past. The term 'pests' is not simply restricted to insects, it also describes plants such as weeds that can be harmful to crops. Through the years the best way to keep crops free of pests is to use chemicals to stave off any pests.

There are plenty of concerns however for the environment in relation to some of the most popular chemicals, therefore the government is currently cracking down on those chemicals that are seen to have the most potential for harm. There has been a recent surge in attention and analysis about DDT and other similar chemical pesticides currently in use. In an effort to alleviate the harm that pests inflict on crops and other plants, a total strategy is being adopted. Some means of using natural pest control are improving the cultural practices, as well as biologic control, so there is less need for chemicals.

There is one fear the association holds for the future, that is if the government views some natural success as a template for all farmers and forces farmers to use less pesticides than they actually require, meaning they fail to fill the quota of crops they need. At stake is the debate on whether farmers will be permitted to try out the new means on their own, or if they federal authorities may simply order these means to be employed, come what may to the farm productivity levels, claimed the report of the industry.

One of the unpopular proposals that is being considered by the government has the introduction of requirements mandating that the new policies be put onto the labels of commercially available pesticides. After the natural methods are not demonstrated to be useful in eliminating the pests, only then could the chemical methods be employed in lieu of the natural ones, the association claimed that this proposal requires.

This means that the government wants to relegate the chemical pesticides to a role of last resort, only to be used if the natural methods are not working, but necessarily to be used if only crop loss is to be considered. On the other hand, a spokesperson from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that there has been no proposal made as of this moment about this subject.
