Adventure Holidays On The Island Of Mallorca

Author : Mark Bartley

Mallorca makes a perfect choice for those seeking self-catering villa accommodation and a variety of activity choices to enjoy. There is so much to do here that many people just arrive and then base their choices on the weather conditions at the time. Sailing and water sports can be found on most beaches, with a range of schools and tuition available for those looking to try out a new activity. Land based activities such as cycling and horse trekking are well catered for.

Mallorca's diverse scenery includes some stunning mountain ranges and canyons, ideal for walkers and offering enough challenges for serious climbers too. Mallorca is one of the most appealing destinations in Europe for rock climbing, with plenty of limestone rock that provides a range of routes to test all abilities. With sheer slab walls, overhangs, and big wall routes available, you are never more than 15 minutes drive from a great climb. Of course it's always best to go with an organised group and a proper climbing school if you are new to the sport.

Canyoning is a new sport that seems ideally suited to Mallorca. The aim is quite simple, to follow the canyon or stream downwards, yet the method can be challenging! Waterfalls, rock chutes and deep water gullies all need to be scrambled over, jumped off, and abseiled down. With vertical walls over 200 metres high and waterfalls up to 40 metres, canyoning on Mallorca can provide al the thrills and spills the most committed adverturer demands. In between the more thrilling episodes of canyoning, visitors are also treated to some amazing views. The geology and geography of the Mallorcan canyons is breathtaking, with a range of flora and fauna amongst the rivers and streams.

From cool shaded forest to mountain peaks, walking in Mallorca can be as gentle or extreme as you choose. There are some truly amazing areas in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range with summits over 1000 metres for the more adventurous walker. There are now also two way-marked Grand Routes on Mallorca, one running north-south and the second east-west.

The sea is a huge part of Mallorcan life, from its history when foreign invaders arrived by boat to try and take over the island to the present day fishing fleet harvesting the local waters for seafood that is served in local restaurants on the island. Amateur fishermen can try out the local opportunities from the shore or by booking a day's offshore fishing using a local skipper.

The perfect holiday recipe should include sun, sea and sand. There is a fantastic range of beaches in Mallorca, with windsurfing, jet skiing, and swimming, diving and snorkelling well catered for. There are quite a few busy beaches around the island that are set up for traditional holidaymakers, but other more remote spots are suitable for those more interested in adventure activities. There are ideal year round wind conditions for windsurfing, and many people come here to learn the sport.. Kayaking can be great day out, with a wonderfully rugged coastline and clear blue waters to enjoy. Sailing is also a popular sport here, with competitions, beginner's courses and boats for hire in many locations.

Anyone looking for a holiday deatination that provides a great choice of activity options would do well to consider Mallorca. Taking it easy at the end of a day of activities on land or on sea can often be just as enjoyable, with some idyllic rural villages offering some charming restaurants with flavoursome local dishes. Combine all this with a stay in one of the many luxury Mallorca villas and you have the perfect recipe for a great adventure holiday.
