Addiction is a disease that affects all facets of a sufferer’s life. As a young man begins the lengthy journey through addiction’s many stages, he finds that he needs more and more of a certain substance to reach the same feeling. In time, the natural pleasures of life are replaced by the simulated, temporary gratifications obtained from the substance. The addict begins to believe that nothing can be enjoyed without use of the drug, and the drug becomes essential to every area of life. When a young man decides to get clean without a support system in place, he quickly finds that life without the substance seems empty, depressing and frightening.
This is a physical as well as emotional consequence of most addictions. The substance becomes paramount in the overall metabolism of the abuser. The brain forgets how to function normally when the substance is no longer active. This is one reason why a good inpatient substance abuse treatment program focuses heavily on teaching basic living skills. During the course of progressive addiction, many addicts simply forget how to live without the substance. The job of a good program is to show the abuser how to live again.
