If your hair is thinner than it used to be, or you suffer from Alopecia (otherwise known as baldness), there are many approaches to hair restoration. With a knowledgeable doctor hair loss can be manageable. It’s important to find the right physician, gain an accurate and helpful hair loss diagnosis and learn about all of your options for hair restoration.
A hair loss diagnosis is fairly simple. The physician will look at your scalp to try and determine why you are suffering from hair loss in order to identify the most appropriate treatment for you. While male and female pattern baldness are hereditary conditions, other issues may need treatment before hair restoration can occur.
A hair pull is usually conducted, in which about 25–50 hairs are removed by gently tugging on the scalp. This should not hurt, and the volume of hair that comes out with each pull is helpful to a physician in determining your hair’s growth cycle. Hair may also be shaved and clipped for examination under a microscope. Very rarely, a scalp biopsy is done to determine why hair loss occurs at the follicle level. This is uncommon and is usually not necessary for restoration.
Once your doctor has determined the cause of hair loss and thoroughly assessed your medical history, you can discuss a method for regrowth. A hair transplant is a common choice, which consists of taking hair from one part of your body and transplanting it onto your scalp. Nowadays, the results are very effective and natural looking.
Another option is scalp surgery, which involves your doctor surgically removing bald areas of your scalp and stretching areas with hair over the head. This can work well for those with crown baldness. Non-surgical options are also available, such as medications like Rogaine and Propecia.
