To pet owners’ delight, dogs come in a variety of colors, sizes and breeds. Some can fit into a woman’s purse, while others could never even hope to fit on the laps of their owners. Some large dogs even weigh as much as an adult human! Because of this size variation, dogs must have the best dog food that matches their mass and activity levels.
Picking out food for one’s canine does not have to be too complicated. The most important factor that an owner must consider is the dog’s size. He should remember that small breed dog food is specific for the nutritional needs of a smaller dog. Typically made into smaller bite-sized morsels, small breeds can chew and digest it easier. Likewise, food for medium dogs should be fed to average-sized dogs and should match the typical activity levels and metabolism rates of a medium-sized dog. The best dog food will have a wide variety of flavors for canines of different sizes and ages.
Picking the right food for one’s dog is essential for maintaining the pet’s proper weight. According to most veterinarians, pet owners can judge the weight appropriateness of their dog by running their hands along the dog’s sides. If the dog’s ribs can be easily felt, your dog is probably at the correct weight level. If the ribs protrude, your dog might be underweight. And, just the opposite, if the ribs cannot be felt, a layer of fat is covering them, and you may consider feeding a diet dog food to get the dog’s weight back to an appropriate level.
So, the best dog food for your dog should consider the size of your dog, its nutritional needs and its normal activity level. A twelve-year-old miniature Yorkshire Terrier weighing in at eight pounds will have quite different food needs than a two-year-old Great Dane weighing 120 pounds.
