What To Avoid In Online Bookselling Business

Author : Adam Bertram

For anyone who has an authentic and insatiable desire for books, the online bookselling business proves to be a low-risk if not a no-risk enterprise. Books are among the best-selling items over the internet and it is definitely good news that more and more people are known to have been turning to the world wide web for the purchase and acquisition of their books. Selling books online enables you to have a bookstore of your own - with or without the existence of an actual or physical retail shop.

Now while it is true that selling books online is easy because you can sell used books to begin with, the competition is also getting tight. Those who are new in this business should learn a couple of things that the online bookseller should avoid in order to maximize gains and profits. Here are some of them:

Do not fail to market your online bookselling business. Sure, a couple of people may get across your online bookstore on eBay and perhaps some of your friends also know that you sell used books online. However, you cannot rely on this market alone. As mentioned earlier, the competition is getting tight so you have to exert some effort in establishing your presence in the online bookselling business. You can start by writing some feature articles on the books you sell in your blog. Also, do not underestimate the power and influence of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook since you can definitely talk about your business there.
Avoid selling ‘Book Club’ editions or offering only popular or mainstream books. Most people who sell used books online think that only popular books will sell, but this is not exactly true. Most people look for books online when the books they are looking for are unavailable in their local bookstores, so really, the rarer a book is, the more important it becomes to the online book-buying clientele. This is also the reason why ‘Book Club’ editions should be avoided: book collectors tend to think that such books are already way too common.
Do not overprice your books. Researching well is tantamount to online bookselling success. Buyers are more likely to trust you when your price is right – neither too cheap nor too expensive by their standards. As a rule of thumb, note that books sold online are cheaper than those sold in bookstores. And when you sell used books, the overall condition and age of the book both matter so take it into consideration as you put on a price tag.
Refrain from using unprofessional terms in describing your books. Familiarize yourself with the proper labeling of book conditions. For instance, the term Fine would mean that the book is in almost perfect condition, without flaws on the pages or the jacket. Meanwhile Good which is how most used books are described, would mean that there is visible wear and tear on the book.

As you can see, successfully selling books online goes beyond considering one’s keen interest in books; it also takes a realistic assessment of your existing market, your online visibility and your professional appeal. At first, online bookselling might sound like a daunting task, but as long as you avoid the things that you shouldn’t do, you’re off to a good start.
