What does a reigning division champion have to do to obtain value in NFL preseason probabilities? Cincinnati won the AFC North last year yet they're 23.5 to 1 to win the Super Bowl.
They are the 3rd choice to win the AFC North in NFL preseason wagering behind Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
NFL preseason probabilities on the Bengals have them opening up in the Hall of Fame Game vs the Cowboys on August 8th. Since the Bengals play in the Hall of Fame Game they will have 5 preseason contests. They sponsor Denver in the standard Week 1 of the preseason after which they sponsor the Eagles in Week 2. They wrap up with road games at Buffalo and at Indianapolis.
The Bengals did not finish strongly, though they did win the AFC North last year, as they lost four of their last 5 games including a playoff loss to the New York Jets. The Cincinnati offense was quite one-dimensional last year and ultimately teams worked out that the Bengals couldn't throw the ball. Quarterback Carson Palmer is basically not the same quarterback that he used to be. He was only 16th in the league last year with an 83.6 passer rating. Cedric Benson leads the Bengals solid running game, but whether he can stay out of trouble off the field is always an issue. The Bengals made some improvements to the team's passing attack. Chad Ochocinco is still a quality receiver but he's not excellent. The Bengals acquired Antonio Bryant in free agency and they took tight end Jermaine Gresham with their first-round draft choice. The Bengals also took Jordan Shipley from Texas and also Dezmon Briscoe from Kansas, and they took former Jacksonville receiver Matt Jones.
Bryant is a wide receiver who's been competing in the NFL since 2002, and has played with the Cowboys, the Browns, the 49ers and the Buccaneers. Gresham is thought to be a wonderful tight end and was the 21st in total draft pick by the Bengals this year. Shipley is a 3rd round pick wide receiver who secured almost every high school major career receiving record in Texas. Briscoe, who concluded his three-year college career as the Kansas all time leader in receiving yards, is a 6th round draft pick wide receiver.
The Cincinnati Bengals' defense was pretty good last year nonetheless the loss of Antwan Odom really hurt. The Bengals added Carlos Dunlap in the draft and Odom ought to be healthy going into NFL preseason wagering. The Bengals have a solid line backing corps headed by Dhani Jones and Rey Maualuga. The secondary is good with Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph.
The Bengals have no demonstrated kicker because they let kicker Shayne Graham go to Baltimore and that's a huge concern that probably won't go away in NFL preseason probabilities. They're going with Dave Rayner or Mike Nugent. Since they don't have a reliable kicker, look for the Bengals to lose games this season.
