Tips For Choosing Good Business Casuals

Author : Christian Wilson

Many employees prefer to wear casual clothes to work, which may be more comfortable and stylish. But the key to getting this look right is to remain smart and professional at the same time. So you can dress to feel good, but you will need to think carefully about what outfit you choose according to the type of business you work for.
If there is a dress code within your company or industry that you need to adhere to, keep this in the front of your mind at all times. You will obviously have to stick to these guidelines in order to sustain your professionalism and keep your boss on side. In financial or insurance businesses for example, where you are likely to be meeting clients on a daily basis, most people will have to wear a suit each day.
Marketing and design industries are slightly different as you will need to look on top form all the time and keep up with the latest styles. Having an edgy, creative look is very important in presenting your company so that clients perceive you as modern and fresh. Your outfit should be tailored to your personality, skin tone and body shape, in order to look your best.
High technology firms such as a software design company, will often have a very casual appearance, but you will still need to look clean and well groomed. So trainers, baseball caps and scraggy jeans are a no go area for any business.
Who do you interact with?
As mentioned before, you will need to consider who you interact with on a daily basis. If you are stuck in a small office with a small team of people, and not meeting clients, then it may be more acceptable to dress casually. However, if you work in a large professional corporation, particularly with strict business guidelines such as in law, finance or insurance, it is likely you will need to be more formal and smart. Match your dress code to your clients also. If they are very smart then you too will have to be smart in order to gain their respect and take you seriously. This will also avoid awkwardness and should lead to more sales, so appearance is very important.
Also be aware of practicality, so there may be tasks involved in your job which require more comfortable clothing.
Outfit ideas
A good idea of a smart casual outfit, would be a colourful dress that has a sophisticated look. Or smart black jeans, flat shoes or boots, and a fashionable shirt. You can always accessorise to add a bit of an edge. Stick to a certain colour scheme involving sophisticated shades such as blacks, whites, blues, purple and very occasionally a small amount of red. Steer clear of bright pinks. Always have subtle, fresh make up and don’t over do it. A simple but stylish hairstyle would be ideal as well.
