How To Shape Up With An Elliptical Machine

Author : James Keyes

An elliptical machine a relatively new way to get and stay in shape. An elliptical machine has dual foot pedals and handlebars that help to provide a workout of your entire body and make it possible to get desired results more efficiently and faster.

Most people are aware that a treadmill only works out the lower body. However, there is no denying that a person can burn a lot of calories while working out on a treadmill. But an elliptical machine is considerably more efficient and because it works both the lower and the upper body at the same time.

The dual handlebars on an elliptical machine work to tone and strengthen the triceps, biceps, chest, shoulders and back. Simultaneously, the legs simulate walking with the foot pedals. When the lower body is combined with the upper body action on an elliptical machine, the optimum amount of energy will be expended while the heart rate climbs rapidly.

Elliptical machines burn calories more efficiently than many other types of fitness equipment. The reason for this is that they work the lower and upper body at the same time. The result is that the heart rate climbs more rapidly. Therefore, it takes less time to burn a comparable number of calories on other types of fitness equipment.

An elliptical machine expends the energy optimally. The triceps, biceps, chest, shoulders, back and legs are worked simultaneously and as a result more calories are burnt in a lesser amount of time.

If you go to the gym, you will frequently notice people setting their elliptical machine at the lowest level of resistance and the casually go through the motions. They usually put in about 10 to 15 minutes and then feel justified in overindulging. This is not the way to get the most out of your workout or to burn calories.

In order to get an adequate burn of calories, you must apply resistance to your muscles. The resistance is what gets your heart pumping and builds your muscles. The resistance level is what ultimately determines the amount of calories you burn.

There are two ways to control the resistance level. On the less expensive elliptical machines it is done manually. On the more expensive ones it is done through computerized controls. Many elliptical machines have interval programs which will optimize your calorie burn for you. If you alternate between periods of recovery and periods of high exertion levels you will get the most productive workout in the minimum amount of time.
